I'm curios as to deleting the smog pump....I found that you need the shorter serpintine belt but is that it?.....What are the benifits? will I throw codes? Please tell me more? ....Thanx Villain

On mine ('90), the new, shorter belt just barely rubbed the pulley for the air pump, so I took pulley off.
Has never 'thrown a code' for this (10K+).
I have not felt or see any change, economy or power or otherwise.
I'm thinking 'bout rigging a ram air system to feed air into system (around bypassed pump) at speed, but that's just me being weird!

the air pump main purpose in life is to feed oxygen down to the catalytic converters to aid in the chemical conversion process --
I am not going to get into all the physics involved but it is not directly sensored
and is part of the EEC output chain --If you leave the control solenoids connected then the EEC will not know the pump is not there and wont spit out any codes --- the only other effect it will have is on the oxygen sensor readings which
will not be noticable in normal driving conditions -- as the pump is relativly free wheeling and not drgging any horsepower, why
are you wanting to remove it ???? the price of the shorter belt is only a couple $$$$ less and no real gain there either --

I say pull that smog crap off.
Some here say no more power. BS.
Maybe not noticeable power, But a shorter belt yeilds some more power.
Plus its weight reduction and alot more room in the engine bay. especially on the pass side. And if its lighter well then naturally is gonna be faster. Like I said, this isnt gonna yield enough power to make any differance you can feel. Hell puttin on a set of underdrive pulleys dont make enough power to see a differance in the seat.

I believe the 'smog pump' also has a secondary function of supplying extra vacuum to other systems, noticeably the cruise control.
If it is disabled/removed, won't that negatively affect the cruise function?
