View Full Version : 5.0 BUILDUP

Well guys, I know I posted about installing a supercharger after my 5.0 rebuild, however I have hit a snag. I think the funds for the supercharger won't be available for a short time, which is very unfortunate. But I am still going through with my engine rebuild. So my question is the following, how can I buildup my 5.0 to bring about some extra power naturally aspirated, yet not be too hot for when I put on the Kenne Bell? Does anyone have a basic blueprint I can follow?

Mine goes 13.90s @ 101 on street tires consistently, although it's with a 5 speed and 4.10s..
.020" over 302
Forged TRW pistons
Stock crank
Ported upper/lower Explorer intake
65mm TB/70mm EGR spacer
Ported E7 heads with heavy duty springs
1.72 roller rockers
Stock puhrods
Comp Cams XE270HR-14 cam (218/224, .544/.544)
Underdrive pullies
Removed AC & smog pump
76mm MAF C&L MAF meter and "True Flow" intake pipe
MAC 1 5/8" shorties
2.5" off-road H pipe
2.5" Flowmasters
I think that's about it..

Damn, I didn't realise you had that much cam in there, especially with the 1.72 rockers.

Yes I know it's a lame question. But hell, I can hope can't I? Come on guys, more blueprints.

Stock motor, ported stock E7 heads and ported stock intake, cheapy 1 5/8" headers flipped over with twin T3 turbos bolted on (or a crossover pipe with a single turbo), retaining the stock emissions equipment, A/C, power steering, etc. Then have a custom chip burned. Oh, and a full exhaust with high-flo cat's.
Emissions legal, totally driveable with stock street manners, and all for a couple of grand if you can do most of it yourself. Otherwise, figure at least $3500-4k for the turbo kit, plus labor for the install.
Lots of power, no driveability issues related to aggessive cams, and perfectly legal.

How so? If you retain the factory emissions equipment, ie EGR, charcoal canister, smog pump, AIR/thermactor system, PCV, and catalytic converters, there's nothing anyone can say to you as long as it passes the rollers.
And if anyone gives you crap, have 'em point it out to you, in the actual state/local law book, because they all say that as long as the factory emissions equipment is in place, you're golden.
Hell, I just helped put a '98 Cobra through emissions that had no catalytic convertors, a Vortech T-trim, and makes a conservative 500hp at the wheels. God bless OBDII.

The turbos themselves should raise a flag, not a legal exhaust mod without documentation.

Why not? It doesn't interfere with the function of the required OEM emissions devices, nor does it require the modification or relocation of said devices.

I don't know Desert, California is a major pain the the ass when it comes to smog laws. I really want around 300 HP at the crank before I put in the Kenne Bell though. smile.gif

Here in upstate NY as long as the cats are there and the "fuel inlet restrictor" (go figure...when was the last time you saw a leaded gas pump...and they just passed that one a few years ago) you're cool on an 88 the cats can even be rodded out and pass if you keep your mouth shut about them.

Unless you buy a turbo kit that's CARB legal, like the Incon kit that is no longer made, I seriously doubt it would pass in a state as anal as CA.
If you buy parts that are 50 state legal, you can get it to work fine. Each part comes with a certificate that it is emissions legal, all you do is show them to the inspector when the car goes in...at least you'd hope that would work. You might need a lawyer. ;)

Damn, that is some major flow characteristics!!!!! However, they aren't emissions legal, something I am striving for.

I'm officially meeting with my buddy Hector today. He's the mechanic who will be rebuilding my 5.0 and installing my AOD after it has been rebuilt. I'm going to show him some ideas and see if his thoughts match what some of you guys think.

On heads you can get about the best ones by considering AFR #1472. These are emissions legal and flow a gang of air over E7 heads.

I wonder how much of a gain I'd see with either a set of AFR 165s or Vic Jrs...? Hmm..
Too bad I gotta dump about 1300 into my rear end first :(

Yes the AFR's are looking to be my choice, especially since they work with stock everything.
