I was new here this spring/summer. I have now desmogged more or less my 2 Mark VIIs.
I have scrapped the charcoal canister - vacuum hose hanging with open end.
Thrown away the EGR heating stuff.
Blocked the rear tubing holes on the back of the exhaust.
Thrown away all the relays under the radiator container (1984 are different located than at least 1988 & up). Keep only MAP in this area.
Thrown away most of the wires & tubings which goes around the back of the engine.
Thrown away the vacuum hose to the TBI plunger system & the other vacuum clock on the passenger side.
Thrown away smog pump (one car - the other was gone at purchase) & installed a shorter alternator belt.
Have cold start feature & good milage.
Now the car is easier to handle & detect problems (not easy - easier than before)

Congratulations.

I'm glad that there is someone in the world that can take advantage of removing the EPA required additions to our cars. I just put my 1984 back on the road and have driven only one take of fuel through it. So far, I calculate about 13 mpg in the city and maybe 22 mpg on the highway. This is without a tune up and on old gas and by the "pen and paper" calculations that I did, not the lies that our tripminders tell smile.gif

Are both of your 1984s LSC or Base models or mixed or what?

Geez John I'm getting close to 20 w/the GT-40 motor and like 30 on the highway and that is a noticeable drop from the stock HO I had -Mike

Oh ... I can definately relate. My 1984 was a 140 hp machine when it left the factory in February of 1984. 21 years and 118,00 miles later, I'm happy that this car even starts and I thank it when it does smile.gif I would sincerly like to tweak this car into a high performance daily driver that purrs so softly that you don't know it's on, but after sitting for two years getting it to go from OFF to ON was a feat in its self smile.gif Then there's the issue of the other vehicles but we'll save that for another thread.

DemonSwede is really lucky to be able to lighten the weight and the hp demand and possibly improve the performance of his classic (some say antique) car. I envy him.

I get similar numbers with my CFI Continental, John. I have no idea how you're getting much better, Drake. I'm a bit of a lead foot though and tend to drive faster than I should.

I didn't mention this but the cat converters are also stripped away & exhaust is stainless steel with Y-pipe - very hard to make real dual with externa fuel pump.
Did get 20.5 mpg when I was driving i Germany (took me back & force to the Netherlands) This is a better milage than I got with my Crossfire Camaro.
Lincolns have a real complex smog system.
My cars are 1 Bill Blass with almost 100,000 miles (Florida car) & very recently rebuilt engine (bored new pistons & so on) due to former owners overheating.
One just Mark VII with forged 15" wheels - need a hub cap here (seems to be rare with these wheels). None has moon roof (which I should like to have).
The Bill Blass is converted to normal springes by using parts from Conti 1982-1983

I got 21MPG in mine on a 1600 mile roundtrip from NYC to GA. But that was at 80mph+ with 4.10s out back.

Oh, and you can de-smog any car...provided you know someone to pass the car. I wouldn't know anything about removing smog equipment at all......... ;)

For me it's an rpm thing.
*** Neurosis warning ***
With the 1988 and later cars, I just keep the rpms under 1500 while driving and I get GREAT gas mileage. I'm driving the 1984 with the digital dash and 140 factory HP and probably a 3.08 rear and factory exhaust with the radio playing. In a nutshell, I don't know and can't tell if I'm at 1200 rpms or 2200 rpms or 3200 rpms. There's no tach and even without the radio, the car is well insulated and the engine and exhaust are almost whisper quiet.

I did the math on miles traveled and gallons added to come up with my mileage numbers. Until I can properly replace more parts and adjust my timing (or until PA let's me desmog) I'll get 13 calculated mpg and enjoy the lap of luxury in my time machine.

hehehe
I admit that it was me but I can't discuss my seven projects in a thread about desmogging smile.gif
It's difficult to read through the posts here because (as you can attest) when you have like two or three or four or five Mark VIIs, you wind up being able to associate with every triumph and set back and adjustment and modification and addition and deletion that people post about here.
So out of seven new threads, I gotta pick one and post briefly about it and move on.

I'm trying to be a lurker ... really I am smile.gif
