View Full Version : Front Strut Question

I just put in a tubular K member. One strut was bad. If I'm going to replace them, I am wondering if there are any adjustable ones available for the Mark VII... If NOT, how far off are the Mustang pieces? Any other options?

Thanks

There is little selection for struts.
The Mustang units are normally a bit on the short side for Lincoln use with air suspension.
Monroe, Gabirel,; and Koni if you can find them.

Actually, I forgot to post it on FvC, but you can get Mustang SVO Koni struts and you can have them revalved to suit the Mark VII. You'll need to slot the strut mount holes or use an eccentric bolt, but they are the closest physical fit to our cars. All the travel and stroke specs match. They're not cheap, but they are the best you can get for the car. Let me know if you want to go this route. I can get you a deal, but I need to know soon before my internship ends. Otherwise, it'll be December before I can get an employee discount again.

KYB GR2s are the only other performance strut left, but they are not adjustable. I am not sure if Tokico still has dampers for our cars.

Are you running coils and different control arms with that K-member? If the car is lowered (Mustang springs) the shorter shock of a Mustang should bolt up fine and the sweet spot of the shock won't be lost.

You can get KYBs for Mark VIIs and they work real well. I have 20k on my KYBs in my '88 Cougar and they are still nice and taut. I'd love a set of Konis, if they weren't rarer than hen's teeth.

Speaking of struts, how long are they good for under nornal driving? Mine have 150K on them but they seem to be fine.

They shouldn't last more than 100k mi and that's pushing it. Maybe you drive on super smooth highways? The air suspension can mask bad dampers. I had really bad shocks that I couldn't even feel were bad until I took them off.

Anyone know if any company has a tubular K member that matches our wider front track width? We have the widest K member of any Fox. If we were to bolt in any Mustang member, we stand to lose a little.

I thought the SN95 struts were longer than the FOX and would work just fine....or is it the other way around?

The SN95 strut has a different spindle mount than the FOx cars.

I coulda sworn the SN95 strut was actually shorter.
