So the crackhead that i bought my TCL from told me he had the tranny and engine rebuilt ~90,000 miles ago (at around 245k)..and through the drug-induced haze he said "now it has a mustang engine in it" i thought nothing of it at the time..seeing how the car had balls considering the weight and i was happy...now that im getting into these various repairs is there a way to tell if the trans was actually rebuilt? i did have to replace that terrible bushing on the TV cable and the top of the engine looks pretty rough and very stock for a tc of the era..can i tell if the engine was rebuilt? and if so can i tell if it was upgraded?

thanks all..for putting up with my rediculous posts on here...just excited to be around all you town car owners!! :D :D

Check the firing order counterclockwise around the distributor cap. Is it 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 or 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8? The first is the stock TC, the second the Mustang. Other than repair invoices for parts, there's really no positive way to know if a tranny has been rebuilt. If the TV bushing has been shot for a while, it probably won't matter anyway. It'll probably need it again. That is the worst killer of these trannys!

Tops of the injectors will also be orange/tan instead of grey if it has an HO engine. Its very possible to do the conversion. My Towncar has an HO actually. If the motor was supposed to have been done 90k ago, its probably going to be hard to tell if there is truth to that statement or not. Same goes with the transmission.

Cylinder arrangement for Ford engines is 1-4 on the passenger side. #1 at the front of the engine. 5-8 on the driver's side, #5 at the front.
