I am going to reformat my computer, is there any way to export e-mail messages, so you could burn them on to a disk?

All email programs have an import/export function. Specific instruction will depend on the program you use for email.

Outlook for example stores a *.pst data file that you can directly copy elsewhere, or you can use the export function to save and rename the *.pst file. The archive function does the same thing but has the ability to archive (save *.pst files) based on criteria such as date recieved.
