View Full Version : Highway Cruising Issue

I recently encountered an intermittent problem holding a steady cruising speed on the highway at 70-80 MPH (over 2000 RPM). When in OD, without warning, the engine will start bucking, pinging, and carrying on. 1st time it happened, I turned the AC off, problem stopped, turned the AC back on after 5 minutes, all was well.
2nd time it happened, AC was not on, pulled the shifter into drive, engine started to run fine, put it back into OD after a minute, and all was fine.
I scanned for codes with a new Snap On Scanner (borrowed) and all it found stored was code 33, insufficient EGR flow.
Any help from here would be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking maybe the EGR Diaphragm is hanging up? Vacuum leak?

TFI module or PIP module. Classic symptoms. These components are located in/on the distributor and are prone to heat-soaking, especially during cruising at speed or after having driven, parked the car and went right back out to start it up.
Unfortunately, these problems are intermittent at best and can come and go without warning.

Yup, budget the TFI first (it was a recall, see the Mark VII archives and forum) and then consider replacing the PIP.
And why didn't you post this in the Mark forum??? smile.gif

Um, Um, it's so hot here I forgot to pay attention. :D ;)
Go ahead and move this to the M7 forum, sorry about that.
I'll do a search on a PIP, cause I don't know what the heck that acromym is.
BTW, took the EGR valve off this evening, really was not carboned up that bad. I scraped a little off, checked the bores in the spacer, can't really say it was very dirty. Pintle seemed to move easily also.
Thanks for your help everyone!

PIP = Pick up module?
Is this what the TFI plugs into?
Thanks!

Exactly. ;)
To install it, you'll have to pull the distributor and remove the gear on the bottom of shaft to get access to it.

Oops, forgot to mention...PIP stands for "profile ignition pickup", IIRC :D

Bought the Motorcraft TFI and PIP today, removed the distributor and tried to take the gear off the distributor shaft, but it AIN'T coming off. I did knock the drift pins out.
At this point, it might be better just to get a new distributor and put the TFI on it.
Nothing is ever easy.

Installed the reman distributor (has a new motorcraft PIP insided) with my new Motorcraft TFI, lined up my "markings", engine fired right up. Went for a short ride until it was dark outside.
I had difficulty figuring out where on that elaborate timing pointer I was supposed to line up 10 degrees BTDC. Did a seach, found a picture.
Should be able to properly check timing tomorrow when I get home from work.
I hope this works. smile.gif
