View Full Version : Brakes with a clunk?

I was wondering if anyone else out there has heard and felt a small clunk typically when the car is almost coming to a complete stop? It's not loud...kinda like if someone gave the floor area around the petals a tap with a spoon or something. This doesn't happen all the time, and it's not abs kicking in because it happens during normal braking situations. It doesn't seem to be affecting anything, so I'm not really worried about it...just curious to see if anyone else has noticed the same thing.
Thanks.

Sounds to me like you need to replace bushings and check to make sure the sway bar links are all connected and not broken. (You could do that pretty easily by just turning your wheels out and looking in behind the wheels.)

You may also ask a friend to get in your car and drive slowly and stop quickly in little increments to see if you can hear where the noise is coming from. Just don't get in front of or anywhere around the wheels to be run over.

With my the early 90's Continentals and Tauruses (I know the LS suspension is nothing like that design...) if the control arm bushings are worn - you can see and hear that the bushings are worn when the wheel stops.

Don't forget about balljoints and rod ends since you'll be down there inspecting things anyway.

Sounds like good advice. I'll take a look with the wheels turned. And then have someone apply the brakes repeatedly and see if I can't locate the noise.

I agree. the 00 and 01 had recalls on the lower BJs.
