I recently puchased a 2000 LS V-8 that recently came with 17 inch rims and 235/45/17 tires that are 25.326 inches tall. The car originally had 16 inch rims with 215/60/16 tires that are 26.157 inches tall. The optional 17 rims came on a sport model with 245/50/17 tires that are 25.252 inches tall. Is there a way that I can correct the speedometer to correct it by changing a gear or how can it be done?

Thanks,
Eddie  espiegel1957@aol.com

This web site will give you some information on mph differences with these tires.

The LS is all electronic, there is no "spedometer gear" stuck in the transmission as in old cars. The spedometer reads off of a wheel sensor. Wheel sensors also used for traction control and Advance Track stability system.

The good news is that you can change the rear end gear ratio and the speedometer will still read right.

The bad news is that the only way to correct for changes in tire diameter is in the software, which I don't think Lincoln will let you into.

I haven't accurately checked my LS but some owners and car rags have commented that the LS spedo reads a little high, so you may actually have a more accurate spedo than with the original tires & wheels.

YOU CAN BRING YOUR LINCOLN LS INTO YOUR DEALER AND THEY CAN CORRECT YOUR SPEEDO TO THE TIRE SIZE. I JUST PICKED MINE UP FRIDAY THE SPEEDO WAS OFF SIX MPH. FOR SOME REASON THEY NEEDED BOTH KEYS TO DO IT? BUT NOW ITS RIGHT ON, GOOD LUCK

You can find someone with a GPS and see how much it's off. I put smaller diameter tires on the rear of my Mark and found I was doing a GPS verified 38 mph while the speedo registered 40 mph. I decided it wasn't worth bothering with.

Jack... The GPS is actually a neet thing... I keep a Garmin III PLUS in my car at all times. I reset the max speed everyday before I go to work.. (a trick I started doing after being pulled over a couple times in my mustang for no reason) and that saved me once from getting a ticket... I was able to show and explain the officer that the max speed on my GPS was only showing 36 miles an hour and not the 48 miles on a 35 mile zone that his radar picked up (on a four lane street full of cars) He was actually very impressed and wondered about the accuracy, and when I showed him a zoom of the map right down to the street corner we were in he gave up, shook my hand and told me I reaaly had it together... Just another use for it..lol

My speedo is 4 MPH off from the factory. I have a Garmin SPIII that I use to verify it. Since I am always using my GPS, I usually look at it when I want to know my speed.
