I have a 2000 LS with the Sportshift transmission and want to change the filter. I know that there is differing opinions as to change it or leave it alone, but the same was said for my Audi A4 with a five speed Tiptronic. I changed it at 63K and it really needed it.

First, what filter does the car take? I noticed that on Rockauto.com for the 5R55N transmission (I assume that this is my transmission)there is an option for an aux. externally mounted in cooler lines. Does my car have this extra filter? Where will it be located under the car (in front of, to side of or behind engine)?

Next, how much Mercon V fluid does just a filter change take? I am not doing a flush. I figure deluting the old with some new and changing the filter is btter than not doing anything. I would guess 4-5 qts.

I would appreciate any answers to theses questions and any additional advise towards this matter.

Thanks,

When I went to do mine they told me that the line diameter was what determined which option you had... and therefore you had to pull the pan and filter to tell which it was.. so be prepared to have a second car available to go get the parts you need... or buy both and return the ones that you don't use.

Okay, I will just pick up both parts and return the unused one. Thanks a lot.

change the fluid as well. Ford says the trannie is 'sealed for life' but 'life' is relative. Changing the fluid is not an easy task - btw.

If you have the Sport model - you have the external trannie cooler.

do whatever it takes to flush the fluid out. Diluting the old stuff with a little new stuff is WAY more harmful that just leaving it alone.
