4 Wheel indicator lights

My 98 navigator will not display 4 wheel drive settings on the dash. Aparently the drive settings will not ingage. This has been a intermitent problem. Is this electrical? What is the cure?

Are you moving the selector switch while you are in nuetral? I could not get mine to go off the other day until I tried it stoped in nuetral.
