Transmission Ticking?

98 Navigator with a ticking sound(like valve lifters ticking)from the transmission. Ticks in park, no ticking in gear and stopped, ticks in gear when moving. Could this be the torque? Went to 2 tranny shops and they did not know, but wanted $1000 just to have a look. Any suggestions would help.

First would be to drain the fluid and look for metals in the pan. If part of a bearing cage is found a rebuild is necessary. I had this experience with a friends Excursion. Fortunate for them the trans was 1000 miles out of warranty and they just had the 60000 mile trans service (documented. Ford covered it. The trans had not made a noise or had a shift problem. I suspect it was from towing the boat in overdrive though.
