View Full Version : Blackwood Worth Buying?

I have had a wild idea that buying a used Lincoln Blackwood might be a unique vehicle to own with it's short lifespan. However they are still rather pricy and not all that commmon.
Any opinions?

Not worth it for me personally. I'd buy a F150 with some groovey trim package, or better yet a Lightning, long before I bought a Blackwood.
Cool trucks in their own right, but not for me.

nobody wanted the mark VII when it arrived? what happened, was it just looked at as another random car in the market or something?

They only sold 30,000 VII's a year on a good year. Compared to the Mustangs which sold well over 100k annually during the same time periods. The exception being '92, which dropped the Mustang below 100k.
And now look at them, available on the market for a grand or two, when they started out costing more than 10 times that, not factoring in inflation, and the Blackwood won't be too much different I don't think. They just weren't special enough compared to the special package F150s.

As I passed one the other day I pondered this very matter, and decided to buy two.
One to drive, one to store. If the price
is right. OK, that's if the numbers hit,
but with it being a highly-specialized luxury
niche vehicle in extremely limited production, especially for an American car, it could be a good investment.
I haven't looked at prices on any, but now would be the time to buy for investment purposes if the right deal came around; are the prices holding up, or are there some low-mileage ones out there at big discounts off sticker? Getting one that's been taken care of but driven a little could be a sweet deal on one of the most exclusive models ever built, and practical if a huge vehicle is what you need. The looks are starting to grow on me, and I like the 2wd for its lower stance. And for a truck, its size is pretty manageable even in urban settings, and in Houston and Oklahoma it should be about perfect.
If you can, and it fits, you should buy one. If you're doing it as a driver, remember how special it is, and treat it with TLC. It's a Lincoln in many of the ways we love Lincolns for, and a Ford truck with its legendary qualities.
Personally, I won't put any more than I absolutely have to into my vehicles until I'm a little more sure just how much trouble this idiot president of ours has gotten Earth into.
So if you really love Lincolns this could be a golden opportunity, depending on the price and how it fits your budget, need and desire.
If you happen to be a Bush Republican that will make it that much sweeter, while it lasts.
The first AMEN gets one on me.
When my numbers hit. :D

If you said Impala SS instead of Blackwood, I'd say go for it but otherwise I have to say no. Personally, I'd get a Harley Davidson F150. The closest thing to the Blackwood. To me the blackwood although it looks nice, is just not worth the over inflated price it currently maintains. I just don't think it's worth it. Good luck in your decision smile.gif

Personally, I like the tonneau cover. There is a button on the key fob to raise and lower it. I got the chance to work on a few of them when they were new, and they are a neat truck. I am not a big fan of the huge aftermarket wheels, but they actually look pretty good on the Blackwood (in moderation). The faux wood seems to scratch pretty easy, and is a real pain to replace (it is a decal, like the woodgrain on the old station wagons). Too bad they were not supercharged, like the Harley trucks. The biggest problem I see with a Blackwood is that it is not really a good car (it seats 4 and gets terrible mileage, like a truck) and it is not a good truck (can't haul more than golf clubs). They don't have the utility that the Navigator has, with the tonneau over the bed. If you can keep one and admire the "gee whiz" factor, or don't mind the mileage, it would be a great buy. With the used car market favoring trucks, I woul;dn't expect to find one for under 20K for a while, since a lot of the original buyers paid over sticker for theirs, so they could be the first ones to own a Blackwood. The first one we sold went for $7500 over sticker, whick was $54,000 IIRC.

I'd pass on it. But I do love the stainless steel bed trim, neon lights, and cover. Its a real neat package. A useless package, but neat.
The 'wood and the Mark VII aren't the same. The VII was successful in the 1980s, and probably exceeded Ford's expectations. The blackwood was a horrible failure, it came out 3 years too late. I mean, there was a new Navigator out about 6 months after the old Ford truck based Blackwood came out! BIG MISTAKE.
The 'wood and the Versailles are comparable. Neither will be held in high regard, though the 'wood is a real unique and well executed design.
RJ, if you see one in Houston you like, I can check it out for ya. smile.gif

I really liked the design of them and if i had the cash layin around I would buy one. You can't find them anywhere around here anymore. I don't have any use really for a truck per se so it would be great for me. I agree with you pro about the bed design. It was great but way overpriced. If you find one around $20k that might not be a bad buy if you got the money. Just my 2cents

I have yet to see a Blackwood on the streets. Though I don't think I'll be missing much  .

Some argue that Mark VIIs have low value. In my part of the country, you can't find a good Mark for book price, not usually anyways. The price of a vehicle really can be influenced by location. Witness the value of car models at the RM Auction compared to Barret-Jackson. To the right buyer, a vehicle can be worth as much as he wants.
If you like the truck, buy it. It is extremely unique and rare. What may seem to be worthless now may be worth something later. Who would think to collect Matchbox cars or presidential election pins? However, very few cars should be purchased with the high hopes and intent of making a profit down the road. This just saves your sanity should anything happen.
Snot, you have your first AMEN.

A little better than the V8 Continental, about the same or worse than the V6 Continental...and probably a lot worse than the Town Car.
The Town Car has been Lincoln's #1 money maker.
