View Full Version : Tire size?

I know we're all pretty sick of hearing about tires, but I picked up a nail in one of the Uniroyals that came on the car today - so I'm out shopping for tires. I'm thinking about some Michelins or Bridgestone RE 930's. Question would be, should I stay with the stock size, or is there an alternate size that everyone likes better?

16 X 245R55 I believe is the most the car can handle without Rub and near approximate the 16 X 225R60 stock tire diameter.

I'm also shopping for tires and was looking for a recommendation as far as brand name/model. I was originally interested in the Michelin Energy MXV4+ (P225/60R16 97V) but it didnt receive very good ratings on tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/michelin/mi_mxv4.jsp)

I was wondering whether someone else has these same tires or something else by Michelin and whether they like them. I drive a 1998 Mark VIII LSC in Florida so wet traction is a BIG part of my decision matrix. Any recommendations/suggestions would be very welcome.

My Dad has these tires on his 90 Mark VII. Not drive very hard, and they have about 35K miles on them and look nearly new. I'd bet they are a harder compound.

I really liked the RE 940 bridgestone They got pretty favorable ratings. They are bridgestone/firestone, so if you are leery, that might turn you off. I personally think that they are fine.

Dunlop SP5000 stock size.
I've had them since May. Quiet, smooth, excellent wet traction. Check out what tire rack says about them..

Folks:

I recently installed a set of Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP's on my '97 Mark and they are the best tires I've ever owned. I know what you guys are saying...Firestone? Are you nuts. I bought them 2 weeks before the 4X4 tire problems hit the news. So far so good. Anyway..you don't even know your driving in the rain. They are unidirectional with a treadwear rating of 340 and AA traction. AA? Well, AA it is. Check out Firestone's web page. I paid about 130 bucks each and went with the stock size.

I too yesterday put a set of Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP's on my '97 Mark LSC and they are the best tires I've ever owned. Better than BFG's and Dunlop's. Quiet so I can hear my tunes, yet totally transform the handling.

I recently tried Bridgestone RE-730's in the stock 225/60ZR-16 size. They grip like glue in rain. They are not an all-season tire. Don't try to run them in snow, I can tell you they are worthless. They were on my car during the first winter snow and I quickly installed my winter wheels and tires. On dry pavement, wow. www.tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com) has great price for these maximum grip sports tires. They are the ONLY Z-rated summer high performance tire sold in the proper VII/VIII size. Wider 55 and 50 series tires may fit the fenders, but keep in mind they will provide inferior handling on a narrow 7" wheel. Wider tires may provide a little better traction in a straight line, though. My VII always provided the best autocross and track results with the 225/60 size, compared to 245/50's.

If price is your main concern try the Pirelli P6000 Sport Veloce. They are great in the wet, very quiet and wear well (v-rated). I got them for $89 a pop from Tire Rack.
