I, too, own a 97 MK8. I bought mine preowned, but they only had one set of remote and keys. I thought I could just go to the store and get replacements, but it ended up being more than that. For one, the remote is $38 bucks (that's what they charged me at the local Linc/Merc dealer.) They, the key is coded electronically, so even if you had one made by a locksmith, it wouldn't start the car. Great anti-theft, but expensive to replace. The dealer charged $120 for the key, including "programming" it. So, you'll be about $150 lighter in your wallet by the time you pull out of the dealer's service bay with your new key/remote.

If I got taken and if anyone here knows of a better solution, please post it.

Also, make sure you ask specifically for the replacement (peanut shaped) remote with the memory recall function. The one I got is a generic Ford remote with Lock/Unlock, Panic and Trunk release buttons (grey, square-looking thing). I took that for granted, since it was the dealer's service people who had helped me place the correct order, so I was disappointed when I took it out and found no switch for the memory recall. Of course, once you open the plastic wrap, you cannot return it. Shucks, I should've looked closer, but I'm sure Lexus, MB, BMW or Infinity would've made sure the replacement was model-specific even if the case design were different.

Anyway, good luck replacing your remote and key.

Thanks Wilkit88 for the response...

So, your telling me, that a key cannot be just copied? Oh well, I think my husband would rather have a lincoln key anyway, with the emblem on it. Didn't know they were coded. Learned something new today..!

He is very upset in losing the original key.

Like most Mark VIII owners who appreciate the luxury of a nice car, comes with the switch on the back of the remote. So when you use the remote it sets the seat and steering wheel to your liking. Just so long as you have the right remote in your hand.

He lost his and I have mine. I guess I can go to a dealer and surprise him with his new remote. And you are right, it is the peanut shaped remote. With Trunk, Panic, Lock, Unlock & the recall on/off switch on the back.

I will call the dealer tomorrow to see if they can do this for us. It will be worth the $$ to see him smile again. Thanks again for your help.
Robin

What is involved in programing the key and the remote at the dealership? And do they keep the keys and remotes in stock? Or is this something they have to order and then you go back to the dealership to have it programed?

Thanks again..Robin

Robin,

Right. The key cannot be copied. It is upsetting losing keys...

Now, in regards to your questions:

The dealer here had the key in stock, but had to spend an hour or so programming it. (I guess they had to justify the "labor" involved... It's all computerized and it should be very easy to do.) For me, it was basically taking the car back to the dealer and wait time in the customer lounge while they programmed the key. (Give it a try before you leave!) Definitely ask if your dealer stocks spare keys.

They had to order the remote. You give them your VIN number and they call it up on their computer. Make sure you specify that you want a replacement with the memory recall switch. (I assumed they would automatically, since they had the model and VIN number. How dumb of me!) For mine, the parts person had to call his supervisor to clarify some questions... (maybe that's where they messed up the order for a "peanut-shaped" remote) but the wait for the part was about two/three weeks. This was also during the holiday season, so things may have been more hectic than usual. So, yes, there is some waiting involved. Your dealer may have them in stock, who knows?

User Nightsky 93 VIII mentioned an online Ford parts retailer in another thread. I haven't purchased anything from them yet, but you may want to try the to see if they sell the remote and whether they'll program it. Their URL is: www.fordpartsnetwork.com (http://www.fordpartsnetwork.com)

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Hello there again,
My husband got his Remote & Key back! Someone was kind enough to return it to the Pro Shop at the Golf Course my husband had lost his Key & Remote at. Thankgoodness!! Also, I found out where you can get a Key & Remote for the 97 Mark VIII.
THE SITE IS... "POMOCO AUTO GROUP"...(www.pomocoauto.com). They are part of the World Parts Network.

They quoted me a price for each Remote, #1 & #2, also for the Key.

Remote #1 & #2 costs...$30.00 each + S&H
Key costs...$22.86 each + S&H

Part # for Remote #1 is...F8OZ15K601AA
Part # for Remote #2 is...F8OZ15K601BA
PLEASE NOTE:
Make sure you enter the part # after the F8 as alphabet letter O not a Zero, also the # after K6 is a Zero. I made this mistake myself....
Part # for Key is H80 NOTE: H8 Zero, not the alphabet O.

After you purchase the Key & Remote then you just have to have them programed, assumably at a dealer. Unless there is a way you can do it yourself. If anyone knows of a way to do this yourself please let us know.
I do plan on purchasing #1 & #2 Remote and also 2 Keys. Nice just to have them just in case. Make sure you email them and ask them if the Remote is the Peanut shape Remote. I did ask and haven't recieved notice as of yet. But will continue to find out.

Again, thanks for your help with our unfortunate situation. Which turned out to the good, because of an honest person.

Thanks for the help Mike 98:
I received a notice that the Peanut Shaped Remotes are being phased out. They are now the square remotes. They do the same just not the Peanut Shaped. Oh, well. The shape of the Remote will not help start your car...LOL! Guess we will have to settle for the square one.

I checked out the post on how to program a Remote, but does this also program a Key?

My question is...We are planning to buy an extra Remote and Key, do you have to take the Key to a Lincoln Dealer to have it programed also. Confused on this...!!

What I want to know is...If you go buy a Remote & Key for a 97 Mark VIII, DO YOU HAVE TO PROGRAM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME OR WHAT?

Example:
Take the New Remote #1 with new Key and program them both together...

Also, Take the New Remote #2 with another new Key and program them both together...

Confused....
Thanks, Robin P.

The Keys are programmed to the car for anti-theft purposes and will be identical. This I believe is a Dealer Only capability.
The Remotes are programmed to the users #1 & #2.
This is to identify you when you disarm and unlock the car so it can adjust to your "personal" settings.
Does that help?

Thanks Mike 98 for the response...

I guess we will have to take the car and the new key(when purchased) to a Dealer. I just hate giving them all that CASH for a job not so big. Thanks for the info on how to program a remote too. Printed it out and keeping it with the manual to our Mark.

Did you read my post about the New York Auto Show? My husband had seen a show about the MK 9 and heard that the MK 9 is not to be considered as a Mark. If so, what does the MK stand for?

Also, at the New York Auto Show they had a Ford Forty Nine that looks similar to the MK 9. Has the wheel cover's.

Check it out...!

Thanks again.... http://www.lincolnsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I found this in my 98 Owners Manual.

SECURILOCKY ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM
Your vehicle is equipped with a coded-key anti-theft system. Only the
correct key will be able to start your vehicle. If your keys are lost or
stolen, you must take your vehicle to a Ford/Lincoln-Mercury dealership
for re-programming.
Programming additional keys
If you need additional keys electronically coded for your vehicle, spares
can be purchased (a maximum of 16 keys can be programmed). To
program a new key, perform the following procedure:
1. With the coded key in the ignition, turn the ignition from ON to OFF.
2. Within 15 seconds of turning ignition off, insert the new coded key
into the ignition and turn it from OFF to ON or START. If successful, the
THEFT indicator light will illuminate for two seconds. Repeat procedure
for all new keys.
If key coding fails, the THEFT indicator light will flash.
Coding failure can be caused by any of the following:
² The new key was not inserted into the ignition within 15 seconds.
² 16 keys have already been programmed.
² The new key does not have an electronic code.

Firast it says you have to take it to the dealer, then it tells you how to program keys.

go figure....

only 16 keys? can that be reset? what if over the course of 5-10 years I manage to lose a key or two each year and keep getting new ones... the old ones are still retained in memory, when I hit 16, do I need to buy a new car? http://www.lincolnsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
