Why do they designate the 4.6L as a "Modular" V-8?

Modular engines share the same basic design in blocks, aluminum heads and other key components. I believe that the basic spacing and bore of the cylinders is also the same. This helps reduce cost of design and manufacture. Advantages associated with Ford's modular engine series are: increased power, durability, fuel efficiency, and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. The 6.8 liter Triton V-10 used in the Ford trucks is the biggest of the Ford modular engines.

That's about it. If you could imagine the modular engine as an autocad drawing, you could literally "cut and paste" a part of the block and extend it out.

The 1998 Taurus SHO motor is a modular extension of the Contour/Mystique/Cougar 2.5L V6.

Didn't know that 5-0, would've like to have seen the next generation Yamaha engine!

More info about the 2nd SHO engine(just found it from car/driver site): http://caranddriver.radicalmedia.com/member/curIssue/jul_96/taurus/taurus2.html
