what happens if i put in a mass air unit or (FIPK) with a chip and then decided to do a shifter kit on a standard tranny for a 97 MK8

You should start saving your money now. I've heard the installation of a standard transmission in a Mark VIII is a long, hard, and expensive job. I'll see if one shows up at the Southern Superheavy Shootout this Saturday. I know it's been done but I haven't heard anything good about it.

I would skip the mass-air meter, as it will not make a noticable difference on a stock motor. The chip will be a worthwile upgrade, however.

I have heard conflicting issues about doing a chip with a shift kit. The chip will give you the firmer shifts, but if you combine it with a shift kit it can put too much pressure on a transmission's valve body.

I would do the chip first and if you think the shifts STILL need improvement, get a shift kit with a bypass(?) valve that won't overstress the tranny.

Good luck!

Transmission swaps are generally more difficult in cars with independent rear suspension. Owners have been trying to successfully install T-56's, Tremec's and the like into C4 Corvette's since 1984 with almost no success. It is an easier project than the Mark VIII because they had a manual trans all years. Your best bet may be to adapt the T-Bird Super Coupe T-5 setup. The MN-12 tailhousing bracketry may adapt in conjunction with some 4.6L Cobra Mustang T-45 clutch and bell parts.

The Shootout was great! There were 20 Lincoln Marks and 76 Impala SS there. Five of the Marks were VIII's with one of them running NO2. He was running in the 13.6's. I was running in the 14.1's and won a trophy for 2nd NA (naturally asperated). The 15 Mark VII's were more modified than the VIII's. One of them ran a 11.5 et at 93 mph but broke the driveshaft at half track. He should have been in the 10's if it didn't break. There were two VII's with 5-speeds and one of them had the hUMp removed. It looked real good. Those guys were real serious about their racing. I just do it for fun and I prefer racing at the track since it's not safe on the streets. It only costs $15 to race for an evening at my local track. Good luck and enjoy your Mark!
