My freind is wanting to sell me 95 MARKVIII for $2000 when you first start it up in the morning there is a knock in the motor. sounds like its not getting oil on start up. After abuot half a second it will quit knocking.. there are no knocks after that engine sounds smooth and runs really great. Are there problems i should look for at 139,000 miles.. Ant help would be appreciated

It might be the cam chains slapping; the chain tensioners need oil pressure to work. It's a common problem with Mark VIIIs. It doesn't really hurt anything, it's just annoying.

Had that problem on an old mercedes I once purchased, the loose chain dug quite a groove in the alum. cover.

franco, I suppose that's possible with the Mark VIII also, but it's only for a few seconds on a cold start (overnight). Then the oil pressure gets to the chain tensioners and pulls them up tight. An oil filter with a good anti-drainback valve design helps, but the ultimate 'cure' is to do the re-build, or get the aftermarket pre-pressure unit. Either way, it's $1100-$1200.

My 95 mark VIII does it also, It doesn't seem to hurt anything, I just warm it up before taking off. Also I use duralube

My 1993 does it too...I heard it was common of these early DOHC motors. I run Mobil 1 and have had no problems what so ever.

I actually like that sound because it reminds me I didn't buy a Lexus...and won't ever have to replace a timing belt!!! ;)
