Hello Everyone, long time Lincoln nut here. I want to flush the ABS braking system on my mother's 1991 Bill Blass. The ABS light comes on often, but goes away when you pump the pedal. Also, the pedal is getting a bit spongy. I am sure it needs some new fluid.

When I bleed the brakes, how do I flush/bleed the ABS accumulator???

The accumulator is flushed by turning the key to ON and holding the brake pedal down steadily, after opening a rear brake bleeder. The hydraulic pump will pump the accumulator empty and the pump will change pitch, which I imagine is not particularly very good for the pump. The moment the pump changes pitch, release the pedal to let the accumulator recharge. Two cycles should do it. You must watch you don't suck the reservoir dry either, especially after you release the pedal to allow recharging. Once you're done bleeding the rear and accumulator, the front brakes bleed in the conventional way. Believe me, if you purge the system thoroughly, you'll need over 2 quarts of fluid. What remains of the 3rd quart can be used for monthly topoff maintenance.

Cool...flushing the accumulator is easier than I thought! Thanks for the info!
