View Full Version : Overhead Compass

Whatever I try I can't get the compass to display the proper direction. I notice some times it's backwards (says N when I'm driving S and E when I'm driving W). I believe the whole module is from a 1988 car (my car is 1992). The calibration procedures in my manual don't work, was it different in '88? (It might even be from an '85 model). Besically it's useless now...everything else works fine. Any suggestions?
Thanks

If I remember correctly, applying a magnet to the roof (above the compass) for a minute or so will reset the compass and you can then recalibrate it like the manual says.
Let some other Mark owners reply to this before you do it, though.

I figured out what's going on (I think): when I turn 90 degrees, the compass only registers 45 degrees...so if I'm going N and turn left (W) the compass says NW and if I turn left again (S) the compass says W. Confused yet? Does anyone have the procedure to adjust a 1988 compass?

1.Find an open area free from steel structures and high voltage power lines
2.Point the vehicle toward magnetic north.Use a precise compass outside and away from vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is(+or-4 deg.)aligned to magnetic north.
3.Ensure vehicle is level and all door's are closed. Also make sure the map lights in the overhead console lamps are off.
4.Place a toothpick or similar tool into the compass recessed button"A" (magnetic compansation adjustment)hole and push up gently. At the same time depress the COMP button with your thumb until display shows"SE tN.Release buttons and WAIT until the display flashes "SE tW"
5.Point the vehicle toward magnetic west again using a compass.
6.Push up gently on the compass recessed button"A" until the display stops flashing and shows SE tW.Release button.
7.When the outside temprature is displayed calabration adjustment is finished. The directional heading should show "W"
8.Preform compass true north adjustment as previously outlined.

Wow, it's a lot different than for a '92! Thanks a lot!

That's from the Helm's manual for my 89,but I'm sure it's the same for an 88. Good Luck
