Can anyone tell me what gear ratio I have on my '86 LSC? The rear differential tag reads as follows:
S424E
27 A886F11

I was told it has a 3:27 traction-lok. Is this true?

that's not all the markings on the axle tag...

up near the bolt it'll either say 3 27 8 8 or it'll say 3L27 8 8.

if the L is there, it's a track-lock diff...

another way to tell is to jack up the rear of the car... if you rotate one wheel and the other one turns in the opposite direction it's an open diff...

if you can't rotate a wheel or it's very difficult, it's a t-lok.

Forrest:

What if the clutch pack is shot in the diff? Will it spin like an open rear? Reason I ask is that I have a 90 LSC, and I thought all LSC's from 88 on had the Trac Lock rear?

I do not have the seats with the adjustable side bolsters, and lumbar support, it just has the regular old crappy type seats that have the smaller side bolsters, and they are non-adjustable, and I heard somwhere that IF you opted not to get the Trac Lock, you did not get the good seats....

ARGGH! This is a mess. I would love to be able to find a set of the good seats, within a 45 minute drive of where I live. I don't really care what color, or condition, as long as the bells and whistles work, since I'll be picking up the kit for the seats that Paul sells.

Thanks

Don't go under the car! Guys, you just have to read the AXLE CODE on the driver's side tag to see what ratio you have!!! Look under the "AX" column and you'll see one of these:

"E" is a 3.27:1 Trac lok
"5" is a 3.27:1 open end.
"Z" and "Y" are for 3.08 locking and open, respectively.

And, yes, if you have trac-lok and the clutch packs are worn it will behave like an open diff. My Cougar is currently in a limbo between open and closed...I have noticed the same thing about seats, 90LSCdrvr...Marks with axle code "5" are usually the flat seated variety.
