If your fan doesn't work in auto, don't worry. It's not supposed to for a few minutes, but then it will come on for either heat or A/C, depending on which way temp needs to go.
If it doesn't work in manual mode, then you have a problem. If you can power it with a jumper, check your fuse. If it's a fuse, chances are that something else isn't working also. If nothing else on that fuse has a problem, it may be a ground.
As for the shift problem, I haven't dealt with that one yet, but I had seen on this board some discussion about a TV cable bushing that may be causing your shifting trouble. Do a search on "TV cable" and see what you find

Hey jeep,
As far as I know there are no vacuum modules on AOD trannys, everything is throttle lever or pressure related.
The tranny problem you mention sounds like you have a worn out overdrive band. This is a common failure of a Ford AOD tranny, and usually the only fix is a rebuild. The "TV cable" that mdcluth mentioned is also worth looking at, but it usually deals with problems with all 4 gears.
If you can still drive with gears 1-3 and the shifts are pretty firm the TV cable might not be an issue, but check it out anyway. More than likely you have a dying transmission. Sorry! http://www.lincolnsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif

my o/d went out @110,000. got another 20,000 just using 1st, 2nd & 3rd before 3rd went bad. at that point i had gathered enough info to realize that the mk viii overdrive clutch kit was the way to go. supposedly will last way longer than the original. they also installed a shift kit for crisper shifts. it also locks in the overdrive at high speeds so when you punch the accelerator it'll stay in overdrive...

Don't try to adjust the T.V. yourself. It should be taken to a reputable tranny shop.I have heard it has to be set with some kind of gauges and if you try to do it yourself you could fry the tranny.

Agreed. I wouldn't try to mess with a TV cable on your own unless you know what you are doing. I honestly don't know so I will let a tranny shop do it.
If you can find a Ford mechanic that would be good too. Most tranny shops will try to sell you on a rebuild, which you may not need just yet.
