I have a new pioneer head unit that puts out 45 watts per channel and the jbl "premium" sound amplifier only rates at 20 per channel. I was wondering if anyone has the wiring diagrams for the two wiring harness plugs on the amplifier. If I could just bypass the amp I'd be happy. as it is my stereo can only be turned up to a volume setting of 10 out of 30 before the stereo is REALLY LOUD. the signal is boosted in dB but dropped in wattage. this also plays hell with trying to install a sub amp. if the stereo can only be set on low volume the sub amp is running full tilt and that starts to distort and really sounds like shit. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

You can pull the harness from the stock amp and see which wire plays music to which speaker...
That should be easy, but here's my $0.02:
I think the wattage rating on head units are a crock. It is sort of like 60s cars with 350hp (SAE gross) compared to 225hp (SAE net) of a Mark VII.
Just look at the size of your premium sound amp and the size of the amp in the head unit. The Kenwood external amp in my Cougar is rated at a mere 35x4 and it is the size of a 'friggin dictionary!!! It's all about sound quality, distortion ratings and frequency responce. Many of the high end head units don't even have a built-in amp for that reason.
While the Ford stuff ain't great, it may not be worth the effort of bypassing. If you bypass the Ford amp, you'll PROBABLY notice that the head unit's display will fade/blink when you get to the strong bass of a song.
Good luck!

You can buy a bypass cable that simply plugs into your existing harness from http://www.tune-town.com/Cars/stuff/Lincoln/Default.htm

Just go to any audio store and ask for the amp bypass kit for a JBL Ford system. unplug your plugs from the amp and put this one between the two plugs and youre done.

I just completed this job a month ago. You should run four 16 gauge or larger speaker wire pairs from the dash to the rear window deck, in order to splice or plug into the factory speaker wiring...after the factory amp plug. The '88 and newer JBL premium sound cable connected to the OEM head unit feeds the rear deck amplifier with a 9 conductor, 22 gauge cable. The JBL amp has "higher than normal" impedance, so it requires very little current and can use earphone-sized input wiring. You shouldn't adapt the JBL amp feeder wiring to use a head unit that outputs more than about 10 watts. You will lose too much power in the wires.
