I was wondering what exhaust system I should put on my LSC? I was thinking of maybe a 2.5 inch mandrel bent system with flowmaster 40 series mufflers and a off-road H-pipe. Does anyone have any idea how much they think it wlll cost me to have a 2.5 inch system made for me? Any info is appreciated

How tight are the emission standards in your home state? Can you get away with removing the convertor?

There are hi-flow convertors made that can be adapted to your application. In fact, the Mark is a FOX-Body derivative and a Mustang exhaust can most likely be fitted cat back (as can be done on a T-Bird/Cougar) leaving you with just the front section(s) to fabricate saving you some money possibly.

I would say that the whole system would go for about $200-400 without cats, not for mandrel bent systems. I don't know of a local exhaust shop can do mandrel bending. That machine is pretty expensive!!!

If you have emissions testing, a Mustang hi-flow H-pipe with cats will work fine, but will need to be lengthened to fit the Mark's wheelbase. This is what I had installed in my Cougar along with a matching 2.5" cat back and 3 chamber flowmasters. I personally think chambered flowmasters are too noisy and don't flow well...pass-through mufflers like the Dynomax are better.

2.5" inch is a good size if you plan on modifying the engine internals later on. Otherwise a 2.25" system will be quieter and perform exactly the same.

I think Dan at http://www.speedfreak.cc can help you. He has a speed shop next to an exhaust shop that has a mandrel bender. He makes a 2.5" exhaust kit with x-pipe for Mark VIII's that he ships. I've seen several Mark VII's at his shop with custom exhaust that they probably got through him. If it isn't listed on his web site, e-mail him. Good luck!

Thanks for all the info from everyone..I emailed Dan and asked about a custom exhaust. Believe it or not the local midas near my house does mandrel bending of pipe up to 2.5 inches and another one a few towns away does mandrel bending up to 3 inches. I guess it all depends on the shop. Once again thanks for the info. Hopefully he'll have an exhaust for me. I miss having a car with a nice loud rumble

Just want to drop in an opinion.....I had Dynomax Super Turbos installed last year and love them. Just enough exaust note without being obnoxious. The dreaded drone is not that loud either. LSCman is a big fan of the larger Dynomaxes. Seems he prefers to not sound like a Mustang either.

Yup, I have heard the Super Turbos and they are great! I absolutely hate my 3-ch Flowmasters, and will swap them out sooner or later.

It's okay to be loud in a Mustang, but the mellow Dynomax sound is best for a Lincoln/Mercury product.

Have you heard Super Turbo's on a Mark VII?? The resonance is absolutely deafening at part throttle cruise between 1300 RPM and 2200 RPM. Above 2200 RPM they are "quiet" at full throttle. When Super Turbo's are installed on a Mustang they are whisper quiet in comparison with virtually no resonanace. This is due to intermediate pipe length and the greater distance between the crossover tube and the muffler inlet. I have driven both. I had Super Turbo's on my Mark VII for one day. Just my opinion. An X-pipe and/or steeper gearing will make resonance less of an issue.

No I have not but I know they are great on Mustangs...I cannot forget the longer wheelbases of a Mark. So, besides stock, what IS the quietest muffler for a Mark???

Resonance can be greatly reduced with an X-pipe. If you don't have one of those, only a few performance mufflers provide low resonance in a long wheelbase Mark VII. My #1 choice for high flow and low resonance would be Walker Hemi Turbo. My choice for high flow and medium resonance is Walker Ultra Flo. In my experience, these are marginal for highway use with stock gears. They resonate a good bit between 1500 and 1900 RPM which makes 55 to 70 MPH annoying. However, they do not ring like the Liberty Bell between 1300 and 2100 like the Hemi Turbo's. An original equipment Mustang 5.0L replacement muffler installed on a Mark VII sounds VERY MUCH like Hemi Turbo's on a Mustang 5.0L, in the interior. They hardly resonate and they're much louder than stock Mark VII. The drawback is the stock replacement Mustang mufflers made by Walker etc are not real high flow. Much better than a stock Mark VII, but they surely don't compare to the other two above.
