View Full Version : HVAC problems

My 94 lincoln continental has a problem with the HVAC unit.

The fan doesn't kick on anywhere below the max. This happens in a/c and heat mode. The car has cold a/c and hot heat, but only blows air at max speed.

Using the automatic temperature settings, the a/c and heat doesn't come on until the temperature setting is way below or way above the ambient temperature.

Anywhere in between high and off, the fan doesn't come on.

does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is?

i was thinking that it was a bad blower, but i read somewhere that it could be a bad thermocouple in the dash...

??? any help is greatly appreciated...
thanks

There is a wire wound resistor assembly located in the cold air inlet duct that provides the voltage dropping to the fan motor. They may be burned open except for high which is less used.
This assenbly is in this duct to keep it cool enough from burning out and is replaceable. It could also be leads or the plug or the controller.

I had the exact same problem w/the 95 Town Car. It turned out to be a bad solder connection of the transistor on the Blower Motor Speed Controller.
I removed the transistor(desoldered it) and soldered it back in. Voila!

Also: If you don't have the auto climate control, then it would be the resistor.

where is this located?
not 100% sure where the inlet duct is...

also, my car has the auto climate...

does it make a difference?

THANKS for the help guys

On a town car the spot for both of those parts would be the same, mounted on the hvac casing inside the engine compartment/firewall. The non ATC models had the resistors mounted wher the ATC models have the blower speed controllers monted.
On a Continental this may be different, I have the helms tech info for a 95 continental but this also may be different than your model year.
If you'd like I can email you that info.

Yes the guys are right, I forgot to mention about the solid state control in the auto controlled systems

Came over here with Franco's blessing...
I have the same problem on my '96 Cartier. Terry-TCL and I share the same configuration as well.

This ATC on the A/C HVAC Unit...Is that difficult to locate ? What I mean is, is it readily visable or must we pull some covers, devices, etc off or out of the way before we can see the ATC ? Once the ATC is exposed, can we just remove it and bring it to the workbench ? I suppose it's got a few wires running out of it, is it a very large part to deal with, or very small ?
I did order a shop manual, but it's not arrived yet and I wanta get going on this one, so the clearer the picture the better. Heyyyyyy...anyone have a picture ?

Franco and Steve...
I have a Lincoln 1994 Town Car Factory Assembly manual from Ford.
If it helps you any, I can copy and fax you the corresponding pages on the subject.

Thanks Franco.

smile.gif Yee Haa, It's Working !!
Mine was a faulty solder job on the main transistor (the big one, size of 4 nickles) it has two posts that pass clear thru the sensor core, and circuit brd. One post was'nt soldered correctly and arching to make partial connection.
Thanks Franco...and all the rest
Great advice !! ;)

You're welcome Steven.
Glad to hear the problem is solved.
Must be a lot quieter now in the car.
Good work!

Would it be possible to email me the pictures and diagrams as well? I have the same problem on a 92TC. The link above does not seem to work. smile.gif

Sure, but I need an email address.
There isn't one listed in your profile.

Thanx guys for helping each other out. The info on all the different cars and years nearly priceless at these times.

Sorry Franco, it's available now. I have the ATC type of unit. If its a simple solder fix that would be great!

Guess I'll join the fray here, albeit a little late.

Just got a nice '96 Town Car Cartier (60k) for my parents, and it's doing the same thing described above. Fan only seems to blow on high. Has the automatic electronic temp contol.

The links that had been posted for the docs/pics don't seem to work anymore. I get a message that the briefcase folder is empty. Can anyone post a current link, and/or send pics on exactly where this lovely solder joint is located? Sounds like an easy fix if one knows where to look.

Many thanks!!

Thanks Steven!

I got your email, and went right to your briefcase. That had exactly what I need.

I must've hit the wrong link or looked in the wrong place last night. That's what I get for staying up past midnight! smile.gif

I'm driving the car from Atlanta, GA to Tampa, FL tomorrow, to deliver it to my parents. I'll check out the Speed Controller when I get there, and let y'all know what I find.

Many thanks for your help!

How about the blower not blowing hard enough?
Anyone have that problem? I feel like mine should be blower at a higher rate, I wonder if the duct is closed all the way because I don't have that waaaa when it's on max ac.

Hmm
Im wondering if I should take mine apart just to check it out and take a few pictures of it ? ??

BTW Steven
If your having problems parking that TC, you should think about renting a smaler car every once and a while and Park in your normal "D" parking spot.
Think about renting some small auto such as a .

. 1963 to 1974 pontiac
I guarentee that little skinny car will slide into the smallest compact parking spot. :D
