Is there a procedure online that tells in detail how to remove the air silencer on my 96 Continental? Also would removing the silencer have any harming effects on my cars performance or the engines longevity?? I removed the silencer on my SHO and the sound that the car makes when the engine opens up is intoxicating :D . I am hoping thaqt this will have the same affect on my Connie. TIA

Not yet. Nick has removed the silencer on a 1999(?) Conti and is gonna tell us the nuts and bolts about it. Go to the TECH section and see how it is done on the Mark VIII, it will give you a good idea of what is needed for your car...and yes I am sure it will be worth it. smile.gif

Fill us in, Nick!

Don't need the procedure anymore guys cause It's done smile.gif . It only took about 15 mins tops and that includes removing the tire and wheel well. It appears to be a bit more responsive just off idle and on the expressway it's seems to have more of a grown up sound rather than the muted elegance that it had before. Oddly enough though the car now has more engine vibration at idle in drive than it did before?!? Now I'm not talking about anything outlandish or even anything that anyone else probably would even notice but I do. It doesn't shake the car, the dash, or even the steering wheel, but I can just feel it in the base of the seat. Anyhoo I guess thet's the price you pay.

I also noted that this silencer appeared to be the largest one that I've ever seen in ANY FoMoCo product. I mean this thing is about the size of a Coronet  . Ford engineers(sp) take the fun out of everything. j/k

Anyhoo...Laterz all.

Yes please do. Does this procedure void a warranty? I have the GM optimum used vehicle warranty. I'm extremely anal about my warranty. Can you blame me though? It is a Lincoln after all ;)

GM warranties used cars sold through their dealers? The removal of the air silencer should not void any warranty. A modification will void a warranty if it directly causes a failure of a warrantied part. The Lincoln dealer mechanic I spoke with said it shouldn't matter if nothing happens (and nothing will).

Oh ya forgot to mention that upon cold start up there is a MUCH more pronounced suction sound than there used to be. Just wanted to let ya know what to expect.

Awwwwww! I KNEW I shoulda pulled that stupid thing outta our 1999 Conti before the lease ran out. It sounded so nice with it, I can't imagine the roar without it! smile.gif

Nick and Silver Cobra: take pics when you remove yours! smile.gif

Have an easier way guys...I can rememeber way back when you would take off your air cleaner and drill a number of holes in the base and reinstall the unit..gave that wild sound and yet still maintained the air filter use..because it still filtered the air before it ran to the carb..well on my 1997 Conti. I did sort of the same thing..I didn`t want to remove something that Lincoln no doubt spent tons of money working on so I just improved the flow a little more by drilling holes (about 12 1/2inchin dia. ) around the fluted part where it attaches to the intake at the inner fender. Just have to remove the filter assembly ..lift out the funnel and drill some holes..gets the same noise and air flow also..and seems to improve perf. somewhat...hope this helps...sometimes us old timers can still function..hehe..

That in essence bypasses the air silencer so the overall effect is the same. Car makers only install these things because most people want a quiet car. I'm sure you've noticed we're not most people. :D

Unfortunately, I removed the air silencer from both cars months ago. Over vacation, I will see if I can get pictures or at least do the write-up.

Drilling the airbox on a Mark VIII still doesn't give you the WOOOSH that removing the silencer does. It has something to do with resonance along with flow. On the box filter of the Marks, both drilling and removing is needed. May be a different story on the Contis.

Another thing to remember is that (Mark VIII, at least) removing the silencer gives you an inch or two more space for driving in flood waters before the motor sucks water...not that anyone in Houston driving around yesterday would know anything about that. smile.gif

That's a good point about the water. I had a Neon RT with an iceman intake with the low mounted filter, and we had a nasty storm. I decided to pull the snorkel off from the throttle body with no filter, and three blocks later I was in water that was going over my hood, but the engine was OK...woulda been junk had I not yanked the snorkel!
