My (89) stereo is getting a little funky, as are my antique cassettes, so I'm thinking about converting to CD player, either in-dash factory unit or remote add-on type (any suggestions?). Will later Mk VII units fit in same space as JBL unit, and plug in to same connectors. I won't cut my car's electrics up.

You don't have to cut anything, just when you go to the store you get your head unit at, bring an extra $10 or so to buy the proper wiring harnesses. If you have the JBL system with the stock amp, you need to get the ford premium sound connectors, one is a gery rectangular with 6 slots, and the other is an 8 connector for the speakers.
If you don't have the amp, you'll just need to get the standard ford connectors, the grey one and a black one that looks like the grey one but is keyed differently.
