The fordvschevy forum was of no help, maybe ya'll can answer them.

Four questions:

1. Does the "Premium" sound system head unit have anything written on it that says it's one?

2. Is it the presence of the amp that depicts the difference?

3. Without knowing the wiring for the sound system, if the amp between the rear speakers is bad will any sound come out of the speakers? (like a serial circuit vs. parallel)

My original system works but it's awfully "weak" sounding for a 140W system. Maybe I'm just use to the 600 Watts in my truck. I'm replacing all 4 original speakers.

4. Which would you recommend: Alpine R series or Rockford Fosgates???

What year is the car? Does it have a rotary or toggle style volume control?

Cructhfield has really good, detailed info on speakers and such. I haven't heard either speaker, but the Alpines I heard in my friend's car were really nice. I like Infinity myself.

1. I don't remember what my factory HU looked like. :D

2.What's the year of the car? I checked your home link and only saw mustang info.

3.I've seen amps fluctuate in volume before they went bad. Generally they just go silent though. Is the system really that "weak"? more commonly the volume controls in the HU's go out causing that state of operation. Sometimes you can clean the contacts on those.

4. This is a trick question. Rockford makes many different models for different applications. Some are better for volume and some are better for SQ. I don't know what your preference is or which model your comparing against the Alpine.

1. found a picture of my factory HU, It's a 91' LSC cassette and it doesn't say "Premium". My car had the upgraded "luxury" sound system with the bigger amp.

My HU didn't have any markings either.

The older headunits with analog knobs and a built in amp say Premium Sound. This is a 1984-87 Mark. 80 watts, not 140 watts...JBL systems said JBL on the headunit and had a gray face.

I do not remember the amp arrangement for these cars. But the speakers are probably shot after almost 20 years of use. Replace them and see if that will cut it for you.

It's a 1991 with toggle volume switch.
