My '85 Mark VII has the Ford Premium Stereo (don't know if this is an option of it all did) AM/FM/CASS. The stereo works fine, except when I turn the volume up or down there is a crackling noise, like static, while I'm turning the knob. What is this, besides annoying?

Its just static. It was mentioned on the Mark VIII boards a while back that a good way to cure this was to get some "anti-static" spray from Radio Shack, remove the knob, and put a little in there.
Go search the Mark VIII boards, I might have messed up the story a bit. :0

It's more-than-likely dust and dirt built up behind the knobs. Pull them off and clean them thoroughly. That should cure it.

Dear god, it sounds so difficult.
Thanks guys. The list of problems is now in the single digits.
