The brochure lists the JBL stereo as having a '140 watt amp, and 12 speakers'.

Where the hell are the 12 supposed speakers?

Even if you count all the cones( 2 6x9" 3-ways in back, and 2 6 1/2" 2-ways in front) it only comes to 10.

Of course, I consider it to be 4 speakers.

I just saw in the 88 brochure where it said that, maybe the JBL system came with 3 way speakers all around?? I've had 2 cars with the JBL system and have never seen more than 4 speakers.

The door speaker grills say 'coaxial' on them...doesn't that mean '2 cones'?

Coaxial just means that two or more circular objects share an axis. Coaxial speakers means the 2 speakers share the same center. I don't think they make coax 3-ways.

You could make a tri-axial speaker, but I bet it would sound like garbage.

Kit, exactly where did you read this? 10 would be the right answer.

My 88 Mark VII brochure lists a '12-speaker, 140-watt JBL high-fidelity sound system' in the options list on the last page.

I can see 10 also ( a stretch, to be sure!), but not 12.

Now I gotta go look at my '88 brochure, LOL!!!

I bet the 1988 Town Cars had 12 speakers...as they had door, dash, and rear parcel shelf speakers.

Pro-fiveoh - I had the 89 TC Premium Sound package, and I only saw 6 stock speakers including 2 3" in the dash, 2 5 1/4 in the front doors, and 2 6x9's in the rear. If you included the 2-ways on the 6x9's it would come out to 8 total.

But if the JBL Town Cars have Coaxial speakers in the doors, that WOULD be 12. Rear JBLs are 3 way, fronts are 2-way, then 2 more on the dash. smile.gif

Ok, I see your point, but I don't remember seeing anything remotely close to a 2-way speaker comming out of the door. Do all Premium sound packages come with JBL's? Even pre 90's?

Premium sound and JBL are two totally different systems. Everything (amps, speakers, head unit) was different when it was introduced in 1987. In 1988 both JBL and Premium sound had the same head unit.

Look at your rear speaker covers, the ones with JBL replace your badge with a JBL badge. smile.gif

Gotcha, that's what I thought. But mine have been blessed with the lovely Boston Acoustics Component logo. :D
