I believe that the interior of my 89 mark vii is pretty cool except for the square, antique-looking, rear deck speaker covers. I want to upgrade the factory speakers anyways because I just got a nice alpine unit. When I popped open the speaker covers to see what I might be up against, I noticed that there is a corresponding square cut in the rear deck upholstry. What can I use to fill this in? Or do I need to purchase new materials and just redo it all? Or are there some decent speakers out there (preferably Kenwood/Alpine) at a reasonable price price (100-200 a pair) that will fill in the gaps so I don't need to do the upholstry?

I forget who it was, but they did a real top notch job of dying the covers. They used RIT, you can get that stuff at Walgreens/Walmart for about $2 a box.

If you get a big enough round speaker grille, you can just replace the factory one. The rear speakers are 6"x9". Many companies offer speakers in this popular size. They should hang from the parcel shelf via straps in the trunk. Alpine has good speakers and I personally want Infinity Kappas. They're expensive, but if their home stereo stuff is anything to go by, they should sound amazing. I would personally keep the speaker grilles stock as it draws less attention to thieves. If you get some mesh, perhaps you can make the grille a flush mount, provided the speaker does not touch the mesh.

You should get a harness adapter for the Alpine from Walmart for about $12. It will save you from cutting and splicing into the factory wiring. Check out some place like etronics.com for stereo equipment. It will save you a bundle.

Not too worried about tempting thieves, the crime-rate around here is approximately nil. I keep the car garaged at night and at work my car is in eyesight most of the time. I'm really impressed with my alpine deck and if the company takes as much care in their speakers as their head-units, alpine definitely seems like a good bet for speakers. As for replacing the rear speaker covers, I don't really want something extreme looking anyways. Some of the Kenwoods look ubsurd. I want something classy to go with my classy Mark VII. ;)

I have heard a set of Infinity Kappa 6.5" and a set of Alpines I think in the same size. Both were two way with excellent sound quality. I don't think you can go wrong if you get either companies' upper market speakers. They'll cost you, but if you appreciate music, you'll love them.

Alpine makes very good speakers, I have two 12" subs in mt Purple Conti and my son has two 10" subs in his and I must say with the factory 6x9's we have I really couldn't ask for much better.

something you can consider if you need a new grill cover is to buy some metal mesh. You could cut it into whatever shape you wanted and cover that with a double-knit polyester fabric in a color of your choosing. You could just velcro that down to the parcel tray over the speaker.

I was gonna suggest the same as SQ cause my 87 doesn't have the hump/box on top of shelf. So putting any nice material over shelf should be easy.Hey Steve where did you guys mount your subs?I put in new 6x9's but I'm not ripping my back seat out to get that much needed bass.

I used the carpet liner in the trunk as a patern, made a mount out of some thin wood. then I took out the aluminum plates that are in the trunk, I can't find a reason they where in there other then for me to remove. :D
Then I mounted the speakers to the wood and then put the assembly in place.
I mounted the additional amp to the wood between the speakers.
