Out of nowhere yesterday the radio volume drops then its back then it up and down a few times. I put it off to a back tape at the AM radio station. It was fine the rest of the day.

Well today at about the same place, as I accelerate the radio does it again. I checked to see if the antenna was up, I fussed with the volume and decided maybe I was in interference area and went to FM. That seemed fine. Ten minutes later it did it again. I stopped left the car and radio running and played with the antenna, and chacked the amplifier for heat. It was cool and all was fine. I drove, parked came back 30 minutes later and drove off all fine. Ten minutes later I cruising and the volume, dropping and surging starts again. jwhen it drops I adjust the volume to hear and it comes back with enough to pop the speakers. Could this be an antenna problem? Any thoughts?

Sounds like the tuner went bad. I had the volume buttons go bad on my 88.

Tuner seems to work. In fact the problem has not resurfaced. Yet!

My guess is that dust is mucking up the contacts on the volume control. You do need to start looking at a replacement but until then try operating the volume control rapidly back and forth through part of it's range. That can sometimes clean it off without acctually opening the unit and manualy cleaning with sprays.
