Polyurethane is an extremely durable paint. It is factory finish on all semi-trucks, as they need it to stand up to the elements and look good. Most cars now are painted with a base/clear urethane paint. Most new car manufacturers have gotten away from the lacquer paint because it is rather brittle, and has to be buffed. Most American manufacturers started using a lot of the reduced VOC enamel and urethane paints in the late 80's, starting in CA.

If you are going to repaint your car with a polyurethane paint, I would suggest DuPont's Imron. It is easy to mix, easy to spray, looks great, and has been around forever. I grew up shooting DuPont, and shot Imron for a few years working at a Peterbilt dealership. Use the regular Imron, not the low VOC 5000 (it sucks! It also takes forever to dry) or the 6000 (base with cross linking clear).

The US automakers primarily use either Dupont(as Jon stated) or PPG.

Both DuPont and PPG make good products that many, many people have had great success with.
