what is the best way to keep the fake convertable top on the 98 t/c exec. looking so new. i don't want it to look like an old mustang or something 10yrs down the road. its fine now. just preventitive maint. i guess.

Shoe polish is supposed to work really well. Apply it with a tough sponge, then buff it using old stockings.

If I'm not mistaken, I think FRJ4 is referring to the canvas-fabric tops that are used on some of the faux convertible tops.
If that is the case, then yes you need to protect the fabric after a good cleaning.
Depending on the fabric used, there are different protectants for it.
Generally, a good canvas top protectant should do the trick. Meguire's or 303 fabric guard are decent products.
Be careful if you choose to scotchguard(3M) it, if applied too heavily it will give you wet-spots and will look darker in those areas.
There are higher-end german-type canvas fabrics that are sometimes(rarely) used for the faux tops. If this is what you have, then only use products specifically intended for that fabric.
I can't remember the brand that I used, I want to say hirschman but not sure.
If you go to the parts counter at your local BMW, M-B or Porsche dealer they will have it.

thank you, i'll try that. its a canvas top. i was looking at the side door for the tire pressure, and it seems that this is a custom aftermarket top, from an aftermarket company. ive never seen one with just the lincoln logo and no fake snaps. but im gonna try the mc guires. im gonna put some pics up eventually.
