WWJD.

You can have any vehicle painted any color you can dream of.
The cost is hard to determine for a project for many factors. Labor rates, Type of paint used. Is it a total color change? Do you want the inside of the trunk, doorjambs, under the hood painted to match?

I hope this helps a little
Pearl paint jobs can run into some money. If you want it black and to look flawless, the bodywork will cost you a pretty penny.

Black will show sand scratches and any chip in the old paint will stand out like a soar thumb. Two component high build primers can remove deep scratches and chips and can even hide small hail dents.

Some Pearl Black paint jobs can entail painting plain black paint and then a coat or two of roughly ½ mixing clear and ¼ regular strength black and ¼ what ever color pearlesant mica is added. That is the formula I use for Urethane paint and for Acrylic Enamel I adjust the mix to add 20% drier.

But every paint mixing / body shop has a recipe for there pearl tones.

Lastly to some people think pearl black looks dirty most of the time, I suggest looking at a paint job before you have it done

pulling a doller figure out of thin air you could be looking at $800. to $1500 just to splash some good paint on there. no body work included.

to do a three stage right, no color change, no body work, but taking all of the trim off to do it correctly, will start at about $3000, and go up accordingly from there. This is at shop rates of 38/hr, materials at 28/hr and capped around $800. The different materials in paints make painting a car pretty expensive now days. I restored a 73 Chevy truck, and painted it yellow. I used 2003 Mazda 6 yellow, nothing special. I had about $1400 in materials, my cost. I don't think I will paint anything yellow again!

The three stage will command a higher price, as you are, in effect, painting the car two different colors under the clear coat. You have a ground coat, and a pearlescent tinted midcoat. There is also some art to the midcoat, to get the right color (if you are doing a repair, rather than a complete) and not have it mottle or "tiger stripe". Applying too much mid coat will alter the color significantly.

As far as doing a pearl black, I really don't think putting a tinted midcoat is going to do what you are looking for. Maybe look into doing a black metallic. Mazda has a nice one, that they used on the Protoge` 5 that has a nice color to it.

Jon

I Knew I was missing out on things in my fictitious price, after looking at what you say and all the hubb bubb that goes with painting I do see it now. I am so glad I can do that sort of stuff my self.
I to did a complete color change on a ’66 Olds Cutlass F85 from red to black and I hated it so much, I said never again.
That was 20 years ago. So much for the old saying wisdom comes with age.
My son and I are going from a Light Cranberry Metallic, to of all colors Black.

Thanks a lot, I think the black metalic with clear coat will be a better choice. Again thanks

My son and I swapped cars I have the white '91 and he is driving The lt cranberry met '91 Conti.

We will be using Martin Senour's Nitram black paint.
I am trying to talk him out of it because I fell in love with the color of his car.
:(
It has black leather interior and he just hates the color purple, so he decided to go with black.
The '90 is soon to be no more, it has a perfect body but the seat upholstery is shot so I decided to salvage it and use the engine for my 4.2L conversion.
We will paint the inside of the doors, trunk and hood. Then install them on his car when we are ready to paint the out side.

The 90s 300ZX Nissan had a metallic black. Beautiful but, like Steve said it looked dusty when clean.

Steve what about a compromise and go a Dark Black Cherryon the 91.
