I just got a call from my body/paint shop and they cant find the color match for my 88 MK VII It says on the on the inner door 7Z. The color is silver with a slight gold tinge to it.I dont know what this color is called . The guy says if we cant find the match it will have to be scanned. That willtake time he said. Im getting the two pieces that wrap around the front bumper painted to match, I need these done so I can put the valence and the rest of the front parts on. Please help !!!!1--------------------------------88 silver ? 89 red on injured reserve---------- :(

Now what!! So I just came back from Ford and added to this mystery; First off my MKVII is a 88 the color that it is "dark charcoal"but it looks more like silver, the front fender has only been repainted, its close but not an exact match.as I said before im just repainting the to front corner pieces to match. They (ford) told me that dark charcoal was only used on 86 Marks and that the code on my door (7Z)is a green!! Is it possible that the sticker on my door is a misprint or what? I need to get a color chip so I can get this paint job done. thanx to all :D

Hi villain_lsc

I got an 88 specification book and the only paint code with a "Z" in it is "9Z" Silver metallic. All the "7" paint codes are shades of blue. Looks like you may have mis-read the code, perhaps it's has been damaged at some time.

Thank you Derek for shedding some light on this.Silver Metalic sounds alot closer than dark charcoal or green. Under certain light the car almost looks champagne a little. Anyway I wish that sticker was slightly damaged then that would be the answer, but its in very good cond. and it says 7Z.How many different silvers are there for that year? thanx.--------------88 silver? 89 garnet red fixed next week

I am looking on the marin senour paint code look up site and I find paint code 7Z is Light Emerald Green for Ford, or Sun Orange for American Motors

Hi villain_lsc

The following info is taken from the 88 specifications book.

62 Meduim Sandalwood
63 Light Sandalwood
6Q Deep Sandalwood Metallic
6W Meduim Sandalwood
8R Light Sandalwood

I thought Sandalwood was a reddy brown color at least the sandalwood pinstrip on my 92 TC is.

There are 3 Silvers listed for 1988

Well I am not the least bit interested in football (I think you call it soccer) so I don't really care how the England team do, but a lot of people took it real hard and there was a bit of trouble in a couple of places

Regards

Dereck

PS If I get time later I will try and scan the paint code page and mail it to you.

I will have a full day today at work, when I have a chance I will look at the paint chips and also make some phone calls to see what is going on. If I don't respond back today I will have something tomorrow

Hi villain_lsc

I know this may seem a daft suggestion but is there any chance a second hand door could have been fitted at sometime with a different VIN sticker on it.

Dereck, That thought entered my mind as well

I believe my car has that as part of the paint code. I think it is my main color, Charcoal Clearcoat Metallic. It is a dark gray. The lower body color was called "medium charcoal" according to the dealer. I think Dereck and Steve's observation of a new door may be correct. Good thinking, gentlemen!

Thank you for all the help everbody! The sticker is not on the door but rather on the inside of the frame when you open the door,ya know what I mean.Aside from the front fender this car is original paint. The label is very clear & in good cond. it reads "7Z" a few spaces in front of it there is a # 19.,I dont know if that has anything to do with it.Although above this label there is a smaller sticker that says "calibration" also in french, and then it has a number 8-22L-ROO then below a smaller number E8AE-6E061-AEN I dont know what all that means I think I might just get it color scanned ,get a half pint and paint these two small pieces myself, this mystery has inspired me-------------------------------------------------------------------------89 garnet red on injured reserve----------88whatever silver

Are you 100% sure it is the original paint?? If it is taken to the right place, completely changing the color isn't that hard at all. Just do a good job of getting under the hood and inside the doors and trunk and you've got it. The car may have originally been green or charcoal.

Is your Mark an 'export" model as in Canadian. One of my departed Marks, purchased new in Canada, had a paint code that the dealer in Las Vegas could not identify. Had car re painted. Did a color match at an independent shop. Silver grey. Just a thought.

Ijust getting ready to go to an independent paint shop to get it color matched and get a can of aerosol made up.I was just looking at a past thread on decoding the vehicle id/certificate label and fond out both my 88,89 were assembled in Wixom I think thats in U>S>A>,also pos. 6,&7, of the V.I.N# rep.body type according to this thread my vin # is 93 .it means its a Mark VII. 91 means Mark VII LSC Whats the difference, my cars have all the lsc markings? ..another interesting thing is my garnet red (or is it burgundy) also says "7Z" . Now let me try to be clear on this; on the label where it says EXTERIOR PAINT COLORS right above the word "exterior" is the #19 or I9,above the word "colors" is 7Z in line with the 19 or I9 on my 88 "silver" on the 89 garnet red or burgundy above the "EXTERIOR" is 9G and above the word "COLORS" is also 7Z...both ID labels are clear and in good cond.....the cars have not been repainted.I hope this sheds some light on this mystery.Thank you to all!---------------------------1988&1989 MARK VII's
