It depends on how much you want to spend. You can usually get it painted at somewhere like Maaco for around $500. I work at a dealership, and a complete here starts around $3500, adding for bodywork needed. There are places a lot higher than we are. Remember, you get what you pay for. If you do some of the prep yourself and remove as much trim as you can, it is possible to get a decent paintjob from a place like Maaco.

Most of the expence in a paint job is in the prep work.
Shooting the color/colors on is not all that expencive.
The masking/taping will also show the difference between a very good job and a
Put news papers over the glass and paint the wheels and everything else.
Good quality paint can range from ~$40/gal to well over $500/gal for very specialized paints.
What ever you decide....Dont CHANGE the basic color or anyone will know its been repainted the first time any door/hatch/hood is opened.
One last thing to remember
If you dont or cant get it sanded & prep-ed properly....The New Paint will NOT stick.
Sanding the Big Pannels is not the problem,
its all the little nooks and crannies that the cheep paint jobs miss.
So you must decide on how much your willing to spend.
Earl will paint anything for $99.95
Maco will paint the same and do some sanding and masking for $500
Better practices will decrome and partialy dissemble as far as your pocket will spend.
Soooooo.... How much do you wish to spend and how good of a job do you want?
Jon said it well
Let me restate it

I concer with Anon, for the most part. As for changing color, though, I disagree. If you are willing to do the extra work to paint door jams and under the hood, color change will be undetectable. It just takes more time, work, and/or money to do it well. And, as said before, you get what you pay for.
This might help... (http://www.carcraft.com/howto/24820/index.html)

If you choose to go to Maaco then just walk over to an open window and throw your money to the wind. unless you specify what type of paint. Yes it has been stressed but it cant be enough "You get what you pay for." If you want to go cheep then just go get some touch up paint and fix it that way, then your whole paint job won't suck.
Best advice is just spend some time and get estimates you will find a pattern for prices in your aeria.

Where's Lynn??
Oh yeah, you might want to buy a couple books or vids about prep work. It's not just block sanding the steel and then sprying some rustoleum over it. There really is an art to sanding a car, and it can take days, weeks, or months depending on how AR you want to get about it.
Then there's always the one dent that you missed that you won't even see until you've painted it.

True, it really is an artisan craft. If you are very picky and would like it to ook perfect for years to come vs months, then skip the dealers and go to custom paint shops with excellent reps.
Some other tidbits, if you're in a cold weather climate wait til spring.
And don't have them shoot it if rain is expected for that time frame.

Anon, I am glad that the links helped. The other guys have brought up some good points as well. Here is my Top 20 list. For a subject like this, 10 just won't do.
What I have learned from getting my car painted:
1. FIRST AND FOREMOST, you get what you pay for.
2. Bodywork is a CRAFT, not a hobby.
3. Spraying a car is a CRAFT, not a hobby.
4. Bodywork is just as important as any other step.
5. No, bondo is NOT the answer.
6. Fiberglass is a much better answer than bondo. It is STILL not the answer.
7. Primer is just as important as the bodywork.
8. Your car will look immaculate primed, even if it is a puke yellow primer.
9. Color is just as important as primer.
10. Clear Coat is just as important as color.
11. Clear coat will determine how long your paint looks good.
12. Cheap clear coat will waste all of your time and effort; go for the expensive stuff. See #1.
13. Once the car is painted, it will look hideous before you get it buffed.
14. Orange peal. Not from a fruit. The darker the paint, the worse the peal will look. Black=Bad JuJu.
15. Buffing is a CRAFT, not a hobby.
16. Pay extra attention to buffing, or pay someone extra to pay attention to buffing.
17. After a good buffing, the car will look more beautiful than your first born.
18. Then you will see that one dent that you missed back at #2, and wish you had chosen a color that better concealed body imperfections.
19. Your car is more than a decade old. It has never had a door ding in it's life. Within the first month after painting, it will have at least two. No, it doesn't matter if you park in three spaces in the back of the parking lot. You WILL have door dings. And don't even ask about scratches.
20. Cars have dents and scratches. That's the life of a daily driver. If you want a perfect car, leave it in the garage. No one else out there cares about your blood, sweat, and tears. Buy touch-up paint, get over it, and for GOD sake, get off the ground and stop crying!
I hope this helps as much as the articles did. :D

For someone who exalts himself as the grammar police, I suggest you learn the term "craft" and it's definition before you fly off the handle like that.

Exalts, huh? Did you have to use the synonym option in Microsoft Word to get that one? Wise guy. As for exalting myself, you sir are mistaken. Perhaps you should be slightly more informed before YOU fly off the handle like that.
I changed the list; I am DEEPLY apologetic for my typos. It would appear that I was paying too little attention when typing that in. Admittedly, a moronic series of mistakes. It was a list I made up half jokingly right after I got the car painted. I am also DEEPLY apologetic for whatever heartache that this post has given you. I had no idea that I would so greatly impact someone in such a negative aspect.
From now on I will be sure to consult you for your advice on my posts. I would hate to have another episode of “flying off the handle.” I will be sure to enroll in Anger Management and proceed with more monotone, anesthetized repartee when I know you are present.
(I never would have thought that having a little fun would blow through someone’s ass that bad. )

Hey man, I agree. I was just trying to give roll224 some help, and I remembered that list I had. I'm not the one who came marching in here exalting myself; But I'm not just gonna take the abuse and turn the other cheek, either. I'm not one to pick fights, I just don't like being talked down to and belittled. Not trying to stur up a ruckus on your new board man, I promise. :D Keep up the good work!

Sorry for the late reply, been celebrating the holiday away.
Josh stated: quote: I'm not one to pick fights, I just don't like being talked down to and belittled.
Then what was all that "NOT A CRAFT" in bold all about after I stated it was an Artisan craft?
Sorry if my correction seemed harsh, I was just in defense mode after your post. You should expect that though if you choose to reply in that way.
No probs here. Wishing all a belated Happy New Year!

Franco, I understand now! I am sorry about that, REALLY! I didn't even see that, now it makes sense. No hard feeling, man. I didn't mean anything like that. Like I said, it was a list I have had for months, nothing against your previous post. It IS a craft, I was just being a moron when I typed it all in and went some kinda hukd-on-fonx. I really didn't understand what the problem was at first, I understand now. Sorry about all the confusion.

Hell, if you are going to repaint it you might as well get creative. Right?
After I get my mechanical & interior problems straightened out I to am going to repaint my Lincoln.
I was thinking about Kameleon Gold To Silver. (http://www.hokpaint.com/scripts/depot.exe?pgm=hokkameleon.bbx)
I'm sure most of you are familiar with the HOK paints. For those not, their Kameleon paints changes color by light & angle. people can be looking at the same section of the car & it will appear a different color to each person!
It is rather a expensive paint, but right now I'm on the kick that things are going to be done my way or no way!!
