Hi, iam new to the site as i have just discovered the wealth of knowledge that the many lincoln owners share on this site. My 1984 is really baffiling me though. I have an idle and engine problem it seems. I know these cars have CFI, but what is actually controlling the idle the Dashpot? The Car seems to not want to adjust the idle sometimes and just die. Also at very low RPM's in OD it misses and knocks real bad i cant tell wich but it shakes the whole car. I know the EGR needs to be cleaned out but i dont know if that will fix my idle. Just bringing back a lincoln from the grave. Ill also hear a rattle when making curves at 45MPH.

Welcome....
There should be a gang of 6 solenoids on the fender, the throttle kicker solenoid is in there. I think it's the 2nd one back in the row. The solenoids are near the voltage regulator. Does the dashpot work at all? I would also check timing and also timing chain wear/deflection. How many miles on the car?
Sounds like you may need ignition wires or a tune-up also, what have you done so far?

Thanks for the info, I think the Kicker work because the throttle will bounce back to come off choke and i can feel it move with my foot. I dont know how the timing is, I though it was controlled by the computer. New plugs, original wires, 93,000 miles. I think my shop replaced something called a fuel canister.

also new cap and rotor, many other things not ignition related too, the car is in great shape. Just the little problem of the idle dieing and being rough, maybe injectors? it also misses or stublems at the low rpm range of the OD gear bout 35 MPH. I know the EGR is in need of cleaning though

Welcome to the forum. Clean the egr. Check the initial timing spec. Run some fuel injector cleaner thru the next couple tanks of gas. A seafoam treatment can't hurt either.

Yeah, I'd put a timing light on it to start with. You could also get a spray bottle, fill it with water, and mist the spark plug wires all the way down to the plugs, they may be arching to ground. If you do it at night and they are bad, you'll have a "light" show....this could give you that bucking feeling in OD under load at slower speeds........
