Someone mentioned putting a shift kit on their Conti for better performance. What I want to know is: what does it do?; can I get one for the AOD?; is it an electronic piece?; what are the benefits of it?
Thanx

A shift kit decreased the amount of time the clutches inside the transmission are allowed to slip. The slip exists to make the shift smooth. A shift kit will firm up and speed up the shifting and may hold gears longer or shift at different points. The quicker shifting will extend clutch life while getting you a quicker acceleration time. Bauman Controls has one of the better kits for the AOD.

Putting a shift kit in a junkyard rescue car is asking for trouble. You have to drop the pan, change the fluid and risk wearing out an already worn tranny. Only put shift kits in relatively new trannies.

a little of topic, but the AX4N transgo shift kit on some websites says to be installed during rebuild. Can it only be installed during rebuild or anytime?

Have a nice wide ratio AOD built with a shift kit or aftermarket valve body and you'll be set. The Lentech valve body thats designed especially for wide ratio transmissions is supposed to be quite good. You can try a shift kit in your existing transmission, but it might have unfavorable results.

I'd think my tranny, as is, would go 'BOOM' if I tried this. I do intend on getting a new one installed later, so this is for future ref.

Do check out the Baumann website (becontrols.com) and read about AOD upgrades. You'll want more than just the valve body when you rebuild it.
