View Full Version : Working on a new exhaust (91 conti)

So, it's gotten to the time that I need a new exhaust, It's getting beat up rattles and has a leak I cana't seem to find.

So then, it doesn't seem that anybody has worked on a custom exhaust for these cars. I will be replacing the entire section backward of the cats. This means all new flex pipe, resonator, and mufflers, as well as all of the friggin bends (all in 2.5" I've decided)
I am looking for a decent performamnce exaust (I have quite a few upgrades now and more planned)(and will probably replace the front section of exhaust down the road)

I was originally thinking flowmaster mufflers, but from what I've read they aren't the best for this setup. Pricing all the parts out is getting a little higher than I wanted to spend, particularly the y-pipe in the rear will probably have to be fabricated.

1 thing I've found was flexible exaust pipe on JC whitney, any opinions on that?
Also, Does anybody know how big the flex pipe is and whether that really needs replaced?

With all that in mind, Any Suggestions?

I'd suggest a new magnaflow Y-pipe for the front, it'll come with hiflow cats... you may also be able to use pieces from a Taurus SHO dynomax catback, such as the rear Y, although it'd probably be cheaper to just have it fabbed rather then buying the $260 kit to just use a few pieces.

Yup SHO stuff has the same bends and it is 2-1/4 the whole way back verses just to where it splits off to the mufflers.

Yup, another vote for SHO stuff...though one of these days we gotta find out if V6 Mustang shorties will also clear the Conti's body.

Bassani used to make stuff for SHOs, if they still do, that'd be my first choice.

either I am missing something, braindead (distinct possibility these days) or just plain stupid... but, how could v6 RWD 'Stang headers fit a FWD conti???

Well they are shorties and are about the same length as stock manifolds...so they could very well clear, just need new pipes to meet it.

ok, I see where your coming from now Pro, the rear bank (near firewall) has a fair amount of room, the front on the otherhand.... looks like there may not be any extra room, what with the starter on that side, and the all the other stuff up there (rad, lots of hoses/lines, ect).

Yeah, that's what I gathered last time I scoped one out at the junkyard. Still, the shorties pretty much mimick the stock exhaust's layout, it could very well fit better since they are tubular (smaller dimensions than a manifold).

Not to mention the added flow and weight reduction. Are the stock one cast iron manifolds? That's 70lbs shaved off the nose right there.

yeah I thought about using a set of 'stang headers, I had them in my hands in the j-yard once.. I didn't feel like having a custom Y-pipe made though.

Flexpipe is ok for only a few years near me; if it doesnt fall down before that. Its cheap though and easy. If I just needed something for a beater I would use it or in short lengths with plenty of hangers. I am a hackjob exhaust [well, everything actually] type of guy too.

Looks like installing the headers isn't that insanely tough:
