View Full Version : Brake system swap?

Is it possible to swap out the Hydroboost steering/brakes with a conventional setup? When I slam on the brakes, there's a brief dead time between hitting the pedal and the brakes grabbing. Since the stock system is reputedly an expensive pain to deal with, I want to go to a separate booster system and bypass the power steering pump entirely. Also, I don't need to have a car that can't steer or brake properly if something fails!

Checked under the hood last night and it looks pretty tight for a brake booster. Still, if anyone has info about this, give me a holla.

You can use a Mustang SVO booster, but the pedal will be a bit mushier.

I love hydroboost, try flushing the power steering + brake fluid and see if that fixes it.

I have to agree, hydroboost is a great system, i know that the hoses are messy but it saved me from an accident, I locked up all four wheels. It was one of the main strengths that the car had. If the pedal feels a little lax, it could be the proportioning valve, most lickly just needs a fluid flush on both the steering pump and brakes, its a good starting point anyway. Also check the calipers for leaks, if the car pulls to one side during braking its most lickly this.

Forgot to mention, it could also be that the rotors have been turned, and they took off to much metal so you have to push the pedal down farther.

As far as the braking performance, the car stops in nice straight lines. ONt too much dead travel under normal circumstances, just OMG HFS! emergency stops. The power steering whines when I use the brakes though, and doesn't stop unless I play with the wheel. I'm going to check the fluid again here soon. I am about positive the systems need flushing badly, and wouldn't be surprised if the rotors needed attention. Also, would braided steel lines improve braking any? Is this affordably possible?
