a little clarification... gas fumes as in raw gasoline??? or as in exhaust fumes???
many people think they smell raw gas when its actually exhaust fumes...
anyway, if its raw gas, you likely have a leak.. plain and simple... but, since you only smell it when the ac is on (is this with EATC on auto, or on max ac setting???) Max ac setting recircs the cabin air (if I recall right), where as all other settings draw air in from outside.
if its exhaust fumes, you have an exhaust leak, and your smelling it more when on max ac than other setting because of the recirc nature of the setting (no fresh outside air comming in).
Stalling while idling now and then can be many things... need some basic tests and such to help pinpoint the problem... others will chime in with the tests needed I am sure

I agree with MTB and I add one more thought.
You have two fuel lines right by the right front fender (Passenger side) that have a connection right on the other side of the fire wall from the blower motor, You could have a leak in the connection or even a leak in the firewall that allows the fumes to enter the cabin.
The connection is about where the pivot point when the engine rocks as you accellerate, If you have someone help you by placing the car in gear, hold the brake, and rev the engine to a higher idle. the engine should pivot and if the connection leaks you should see it.
If the leak is small enough the fuel could evap rather rapidly and be harder to trace just by looking for a wet spot on a line or the ground.

PS I think I am having a brain fart.
Welcome aboard. I hope you can hang around a while and add some of what you learn from your car to the site.
Look around check out our great Tech info that grows from time to time.

If it is gas fumes and not exhaust (or coolant) the first thing I suspect is leaky fuel injectors. Either the O-rings on the injectors or the injectors themselves.
My last Mark VIII would stink up the interior with gas smell occasionally, I could never trace the leak. Turns out it was the injectors, same reason my gas mileage was so horrible! :)

It's my wifes car I don't drive it often. She said she smells raw gas when the heat is on but not as bad as with the a c on.
I looked under the hood an under the car when on ramps an saw nothing leaking. I'll check everything you have said an get back to you guys.
thanks

It's back still gitting raw gas fumes when temp. is high outside with a.c. on.
I notice the gas tank has a great amount of pressure when I take the cap off
I have a 1988 marquis an the pressure is nothing like the Lincoln when you remove the cap
thanks

Sounds like you have a bad vent valve in the gas cap or the evap system is not working properly.
If you have access to another gas cap from a conti or similar car give it a try. Ant cas cap will not due because of Vent/ non-vent systems.
If that dose no good then look for a solinoid in the vacuume hose that drops down between the radiator and where the engine and Tranny splits. if it is not functioning correctly it will cause pressure to build up in the system.
