View Full Version : Continental Brake Upgrade (56k, pics)

This is the exact same upgrade all the taurus guys do!
It didn't take more than 2 hours to put on and makes a huge difference.
95 ABS Taurus knuckles
93 Mark VIII calipers and rotors
Pulled together the parts from various sources, we had to replace the bearing in one of the knuckles and get new pads, but it was a direct swap. (Done on 91 Conti)
Painted up

So here's the 6 million dollar question, will these work with 15 inch wheels?

I just thought I'd stick this around for a while.
I know I am not one to talk but would you submit this as a tech article?

If that rotor is 11" or larger, odds are 16" is the smallest you can go. Just add Mark VIII, V8 Conti or Taurus SHO wheels to the package and it'll be fine..
Nice job, Dario. Your car rocks. You guys need to email me the step by step directions and we'll make a sweet TECH article with it.

Where did you get stainless lines made?

If you want to add the Cobra Calipers to this setup check out what the SHO guys are doing.
"The parts needed are the ’94-’04 Cobra loaded calipers with the bracket. Others may be substituted but because I have no direct information I will only refer to the ‘94-‘04 Mustang 2003 Cobra Front Brake Calipers M-2320-AF. These are dual piston, aluminum calipers made by PBR. At 4 lbs each they are half the weight of the OEM front calipers"

these brake up-grades,are they better than stock calipers ?
Dario

Since I put these new brakes on, I've felt a massive difference in stopping ability. The brakes we took off were in decent condition and barly stopped the car, and now the lincoln stops like you would expect it to.

You can get the cobra calipers off ebay for 200.00 and they will bolt up to 94-95 cont. the hubs are the same. Thats what Im using. The cobra rotors are 13" and the smallest wheels you can run are 17".
P.S. I have been told you can put the stock front on the rear with a little modifing but dont hold me to that.

Remember the bolt pattern is different and you'll need 94-up Mustang (or maybe 99-up Cobra because of the independent rear) rear rotors to match the Cobra stuff.
Just thinking out loud. Might be wrong on that.
Anyway, I'm working on the TECH article with Dario's information, I would really like to append it with your 13" Cobra brake info when its all said and done. Keep us posted.

you can drill out the correct bolt pattern on the stock cobra rotors.
I used 98 cobra parts. You do have to get new hoses also for the cobra.

Interesting!
I am working on the article and I have a few questions:
Do 1994 Contis already have the right knuckle? (Steve?)
Does the stock spare clear the new discs?
Can the stock caliper bolts be reused on the Mark calipers?
Stock Mark tire size is 225/60/16, but I assume 60 series is too tall for a 15" Conti. What is the Conti's tire size?As soon as these are answered, the article will be up.

70 series? Ok, good...60 series 16inchers will be about right.
FWIW, I put Mustang front brakes on my 88 Cougar (basically same thing as Conti to newer Conti) and sure enough, the spare didn't work...it hit the caliper. Needed the Mustang spare to make it work.
Just a friendly warning. :)

For tires, if you had some stockish 16s I'd go for 225/50s.. I'm using a Mark VIII spare, this clears the 11.6s but as far as 13s I'd say just get another wheel.
