my gas guage is giving a false reading,it reads more gas in the tank then there really is,you guys told me it was a sending unit problem and i should replace the pump since the sending unit is part of it,well yesterday i was going to replace it but the guy told me to hold off because he thinks the cluster is giving the false reading,is this true ?can the cluster give a false reading or is it the sending unit or could something else cause this problem.................

Could be either, also if there is a dent in the tank it will cause a higher reading than actual. BTW no fuel guage is really accurate, the 98TC starts dropping from full as soon as the fuel is used, but when it reads empty there is still a lot of gas in the tank, like approx 2 gallons. The 88 Cont is the exact opposite, you can drive 80 miles on the highway before its indicates less than Full, and there is still fuel in the tank when it reads the big "E".

yea, I have yet to see a really accurate fuel gauge on any vehicle... they always read a little off, or sometimes a lot off.
The wifes cougar will go 100 miles on hwy before dropping off the peg! but in the next 300 miles (400 total) it drops to empty.
my jimmy says its full all the time... I use the trip odo to keep track of how many miles on its tank, I always fill it full, and I know it gets approx 20 mpg avg, so I can get 300 miles with a safety bubble of gas to get to a station.
the 91 conti seems to mimic the cougar somewhat, but it drops off the F at probably around 80 miles or so. it also will read E when its got about 2 or 3 gallons left.
