I don't know if it was a mercury cougar or a t bird cuz they both look the same to me. The race was from a light. At the start we were even, and then at about 30 mph, I gained 1/4 car lenght. At 60 mph, I had 1/2 a car lenght on him, then at 80 he was on my rear bumper. Oh plus it had some body kit on too(side skirt) and it was red
I thought the cougars were fast , i think 0-60 is in 7.2????
How fast do they do the 1/4 mile in?

depends on the year and powertrain package on the tbird/cougar... they were offered with both V8's (5.0 in early years, and 4.6 later years) as well as a V6 (3.8).

Not having driven a V8 cougar (my 92 is a v6), I would imagine they can be pretty damn quick... my cougar is a real dog off the line (thanks to a worn out 3.8, and pretty tall rear gear), but once its rolling and engine is in that zone where they sound like they are gonna explode (over about 3k rpm for my 3.8), it pulls pretty damn hard. BTW, my cougar has nearly 180k on it.

Its hard to say what you went up against, there were a lot of those Tbird Cougars with supercharged V6s and 5-speeds. If you went against one of those, driver error on his part (slow shifting, reaction time, etc) would explain this.

The regular V6s, the 5.0 V8s and the 4.6L V8s would have a hard time duplicating what you're saying happened. But probably we need more info. :)

It was more like the 97 model or so.

If it has the redesigned nose (google images of 1996 vs 1997 models to see what I mean) than it was a 4.6L V8 that did that to ya.

Now that I think about it, the Conti does have shorter gearing, so that would explain it.

Open up the airbox, the exhaust, get a chip...then you'll smoke it.

Go check the thread where a modified Conti beat a porsche boxter S. That's the good stuff.

If I had that kind of money, I would modd my Mark just because its a RWD.
I think the Conti's performance is really good. One time my dad was driving the Mark VIII and me in my conti, I beat the mark by 1/4 car lenght. note My dad doesn't know how to race or how to launch. So if you have a bad driver in a mark the conti can take the mark.BTW the race only went up to 60 mph

I say modify all three of them. ;)

Heck, removing the air silencers is free, plus it shaves a few pounds off the front end. And we made tech articles for all three of your rides for this reason. :)

That Conti sure makes a nice sound at wide open throttle doesn't it? ;)

If you're not into modding for the sake of modding you can replace old parts with newer and better hi performance ones when the time comes :)

Hey, my Conti is the Boxster eater! That Porche owner was surprised when I smoked him, but he did have the top down and the Conti is a slipperly beast aerodynamicaly. WOT is the best, I have a lot of fun with that, especially with a single Magnaflow on the left side only. She is civil at idle, but WOT calls the beast!

I find removing the air silencer difficult, I need alittle more pics to see where the part is and all.
silver Cobra, I would love to mod my cars but my dad says theres no point in it, why not buy another car with that money? I do plan on to add a Chip to the Mark VIII.
Vector, what have you done to your car that you can beat porche? and Finally there is conti owner near by me, I live in jacksonville. Have you ever been to the track yet?

Remove the silencer (under the engine cover and under the air filter) on the town car first...its easy and builds confidence, if you know what I mean...see the TECH article for 1998-2002 models.

You'll notice a difference, only costs $3 at a hardware store, and then you'll be excited to tackle the harder cars (VIII and Conti). ;)

It must be the season - I felt guilty the other day because I've been driving around in my TC while the Conti just sits, so when I had to run an errand, I took the Stallion. Some kid in a rice-burner, complete with spoiler and that stupid exhaust sticking 2 feet past the back bumper pulled up next to me. He kept revving his ride, waiting for the light to change. When it did, I let the Conti go - still screeching the front tires 3 blocks down the road. The kid tried to keep up for the first block but realized he was beat. Every once in awhile its nice to pretend that I don't have any gray hair... :o

I have had two really good races in my 95 Continental. My friend got a 1996 Crown Victoria P-71 Police Interceptor awhile back. There descently fast cars and the Lincoln smoked it. I also had a young kid and a Dodge stratus pullup next to me reving his engine then the light turned and we both took off. The race got right past 120 on my speedometer and I was still ahead of it but barely so I stoped to ask him what he had done to it and he showed me how his rich parents had just bought him the new 02 Stratus and also paid for an aftermarket turbo. After that I was surprised I won. He must've not known how to drive. Point is, made him feel REAL bad for putting all the money in his new car and killing him with a "grannie" car.

Mark 0101-
My list of mods is limited to intake silencer removal, opening up the intake snorkel, and better exhaust, K&N, and good maintenance and tires, Strutmaster springs x $,that's about all. I think the real reason I beat him has to do with driver skill, yea I'm bragging, I turned off my AC to get all power available before launch, left the traction control on, and the fact that he had his top down doomed him on top end. It was all over by 80 MPH though I went a bit higher just to make the point clear.

I also think the springs keep the car a bit stiffer in launch than the air bags.

A good driver in a S would probably trounch me in a hardtop, so I gotta stay humble. I got soundly beat by a Jeep Cherokee once, mustahadahemi!

BTW, I'm in Gainesville and I'm in Jax every few weeks. Wanna race? :-)

Sure I will meet up with u but I am not going to be racing with my Conti, The mark sounds more of your limit.:D
Was the jeep modded?

Did not stop to ask the Jeep owner, but it looked stock, I think it did have the hemi, it was very quick.

I'll let you know next time I'm in JAX with the Conti, she is a beautiful gal IRL!

the new ones with the HEMI and 5-speed auto are pretty peppy. If it makes you feel better, his fuel economy was much worse, even if he stuck at 55mph so the "fuel saving MDS" that Dr. Z talks about was allowed to kick in.
