Not a moment too soon, the MKX and Z arrive in a matter of weeks to showrooms. ;)

No doubt, look at the alternator location! A mechanic's nightmare just like the original.
Just with more power and less waste.:)

Are those shorty headers?

Nah, they are cast manifolds that actually flow worth a damn. Headers and modern-day noise pollution laws don't mix. :)

Oh come on Dereck... shinned knuckles, pulling the engine to change the alternator, 1mm tight clearances all over the place... nothing a well seasoned master mechanic like yourself couldn't handle...;)

Yeah Dereck, I've looked under the hood of many a V8 BMW or Mercedes (or just about any car with a "V" engine in a cab-forward chassis) and I can't imagine the Duratecs being much harder...except for the alternator location. That's a tough one.

I like the flexible tooling used in that engine plant. Gives them the option to change displacement easily unlike their vintage engine plants. Now how about a luxury hybrid... 265 HP Duratec with a 50 HP electric motor up front and in back for 365 HP total, and being "green" at the same time.

Is that a smog pump delete pulley under the alternator? ;)

Your mind is certainly in the right place. Gotta love this forum. :)

I can't wait to see this stuffed under the hood of a Fusion with a six speed on the side of it. They say it's the same dimensions as the 3.0, but even still.... changing belts involve yanking the motor or what?

Ask Dereck... He just loves those Duratec engines. :p All joking aside, it seems as if there is never enough clearance to do much of anything on a Duratec without removing the engine, or should I say raising the body over the engine. I know the FWD crowd will not like what I have to say; but there is a lot to be said of RWD platforms and being able to work on them easily. Took me 2 hours to change the belts on my wife's Lexus RX300 (AWD - but primarily a FWD chassis). Belt takes all of 5 minutes on my 1997 TC or IS300 for that matter. Seems to be a shift away from "serviceability" to "stuffability" - meaning being able to stuff the 3.5 into just about any FWD chassis (perhaps Focus?) without regard to being able to service the thing.

Hi Sysanalyst
Tomorrow is the start of my Duratec refit hell as I am finally getting around to fitting that junkyard motor in the Mondeo, watch out for the new "Duratec refit hell" thread :)

If you wish for it hard enough, maybe on the MKS. It is a Volvo S80 chassis, and Volvos are known for being turbo friendly... ;)

I agree what the **** are they thinking? Then again, the alt. never needs to be changed right?

Most folks don't work on modern day cars, and they are pretty reliable compared to their counterparts 20+ years ago when people actually did work on cars en masse.
Replacing the alternator on a 10-year old 2006 Zephyr will be a pain, but its just a pain in the wallet for most people.

There are alot of cars where you have to take off the wheel to change the alt. or the battery
