I want to flush the power steering system on my 84 because the previous owner filled it with power steering fluid and i would like to have the transmission fluid in there. Whats the easyiest way to do this? Also on the power steering rack what is that Black plug that is close to the drivers side for? Also on the return lines there is a cylindrical object that has two lines attached to it, is that the filter, or the damper or something?

Thanks, I know I have a lot of questions lol

If the last owner got most of the old fluid out and is now running power steering fluid, that's fine. I was told it's probably better than the Type F fluid Ford used originally. When I redid my steering system in my Mark, I just used Valvoline's synthetic power steering fluid. No complaints so far.... To flush the system, get lots of cheap Type F and disconnect the return line at the bottom of the pump. Connect a new rubber hose to the pump and stick it into a jug of fluid. Have a large catch pan to allow the original line to dump fluid through the hose. Be ready to change the jug often. You'll probably go through it quick. 2-3 gallons should be plenty. After flushing the system, refill with good fluid and you should be set. A quart of good fluid is all you should need. The system takes a couple pints I think.

Thanks for the info. I wont flush the system since the fluid is in good condition, i just thought it needed the tranny fluid or something like that. I do need to replace the return lines however, they are a bit leak.

Just be careful in case you're dealing with the hydroboost steering/brakes system. Be awful to lose stopping capability. . . ::eek::

If you lost the power steering belt you would lose power steering and power brakes, rare though. But there is a little resiviour that holds pressure for a few pumps of the brake if the belt or something did break. Looks good for now :)
