My ignition is broke instead of replacing my steering column can I install a remote control starter to turn my ignition on and off?

You don't need to replace your steering column to fix the ignition. The lock cylinder is about $8 at a parts store, comes with a new key too.

Yep, like pro said. Unless someone really hacked up your steering column trying to steal your car. Then you could install the remote and not connect the brake pedal shutoff wire and cut the steering wheel lock pin (s) and transmission interlock cable...or is that how to steal a car that is running with the remote starter? :o

Its a standard Ford replacement lock at any parts store. I am pretty sure it was less than $10.

Instructions are here for removal of the cylinder...in the middle of the article. This only applies to airbag equipped Continentals. :)

Scroll to the middle of the article. There's a section about the steering column and lock cylinder.

Yes, I know I could have just replaced the ignition except one of the mechanics I took my car to stripped the teeth on the ignition so I think I need a whole new column. But instead of replacing the steering column I was told I could get a remote starter instead. So, does a remote starter turn my car on and off?

Read my post up there if you missed it^ But basicly, gotta disable the brake shutoff on it, find a way to get the trans out of park and be able to unlock the wheel.

If the teeth are stripped off you should be able to get a replacement ignition rack repair kit, it should have the little cog and the rack that attaches to the switch on the column.

Most remote starter kits that I have seen, including the one on my car, shut themselves off after 15 min.

That wouldn't be good going down the road...

The igniton part(s) he stripped is separate from the steering column. This mechanic sounds like 100% trouble, I'd look into having someone else fix their mistake and send them the repair bill.:)

As for the the remote starter, I would do it even if you get your column issues sorted out. A remote starter is dang handy on those cold days when you have to head out. When I worked daylight shift about a million years ago, I would roll over, hit the remote start (which I kept on the nightstand), and do my morning routine. The whole time the car was warming up.

Of course, you want to make sure you buy a 2-way remote start so you know the car is running without needing to go outside, down the hallway, and around the corner to check on it. What would be the point then?

You have a hallway outside? Cool! But seriously, I use the stock remote for my starter and have to stand in the dining room listening for the engine to start. It is a pain but it was a cheap unit.

You still have to be able to see that car.

And, no I don't have a halway outside, but if you lived in an apartment complex you might have a breezeway or similiar you would have to traverse.

Yes,the only reason these mechanics looked at my car was because I work for a car dealership and I was told that they would fix my car (my brakes) at cost. Ofcourse after they had my car for 18 days I told them I wanted it back regardless of it being fixed and I would have my regular mechanic fix it. He told me he thought (regarding the ignition) that he thought he could get me a new ignition or somethingthat would fix it from the ford dealership without replacing the whole steering column. But ofcourse my brakes are the big issue. Oh and they replaced my front rotors, brake pads, caliper, and gave me a new battery at no charge. However my brakes are still messed up and my ignition is stripped.

*Insert anti-dealer rant here*
sounds as if sales are slow so they mess things up good then "make you a great deal on a (even better quote) Better car."
Just tell them you will wear the mechanic and service writer like slippers if you don't get your car back in one piece tomorrow!
and you will not remove your foot untill you are damn good and ready.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. You are getting screwed. I hope they didn't ruin the car, and that your mechanic can fix it for a reasonable amount.

You need someone else to tell you what the real problem with the ignition is. Its probably just that lock cylinder I said originally.
