My 1/2 button seems defective. Can the keypad simply be replaced without changing the factory number?

The keyless entry brain is in the trunk area IIRC and the keypad is just that, a keypad. So you should be safe just replacing it. Wait for an "I concur' from other LoL'ers to be sure.

The keypad has no computer in it, swap it out like you would a keyboard on your computer. I have one in my garage that I yanked from a 1993 Mark VIII at the junkyard.

the newer raised numbers are so crappy I loved the older flat 'Membrane' style keypad was superior to the raised button style.
I am glad my Conti has the flat style keypad

the more you use the sooner it dies, not has durable as the older flat keypad, seems like it more durable and no moisture gets in there, while the newer exposed, raised number are so crappy and cheap. The keypad on my old 96 TC is the flat style and still original and works flawlessly over 223k miles. My cousin 01 keypad had be the replaced 2x, the first was under warranty then it went out again 3k miles after warranty ran out, only 52k miles. My coworker keypad died and hes not even bothering with it, 46k miles. I guess it also depends on where you live too. I know several member on CVN that keypad died and have to be replaced .

Now that I can compare the two up close and personal, the doorhandle style of the Continental and the Mark VIII are seemingly identical, save for the chrome lift handle on the Conti, the keypad on my 2000 is raised, and the Mark's is flat, they don't look interchangeable at all. Ford spent so much money on subtleties of otherwise identical parts, it's ridiculous. Well, no wonder they have to discontinue parts at the pace they do.

Have yet to study the Continental in a good old-fashioned SoFla rainy week, but while the Mark's keypad buttons work perfectly all the time, it loses it's illumination after a good soaking rain. After a dry day, it comes back on. Mind you, the buttons still work regardless of rain. Big mystery, but I only use the pad if I want something out of the car when I'm already outside for some reason (and keys usually in the house...heh)

Does anyone know (No Continental shop manual set yet....lol) if the 2000 has a separate keyless entry computer like many other Ford products or is it like the DDM (driver's door module) on the GenII Marks? I just want to know my product.
