The discussion on remotes reminded me about a spare key I received when I bought my car from the dealer. The key will turn the ignition but will not start the car. The engine just sits and cranks. Does this key need to be programmed to work? I only have one key that works and would like to have a spare.

Thanks

If the car has PATS (most likely), the other ignition key has to be programmed.

It sounds like it needs to be programmed. It's called a PATS key. I would shop around, I think locksmiths can program it instead of the dealer, maybe someone with a shop manual knows how to program them too.

1998 and up: PATS II

Two working keys are required to program a third using the info in your owner's manual. You'll most likely have to get a pro to initialize the second key.
